Six SOJC PR students. One $300 budget. And a national campaign to protect public libraries.

Earlier this year, students from the SOJC partnered with the Eugene Public Library to create a public relations campaign as part of the PRSSA Bateman Case Study Competition. This national competition tasks students with creating a real campaign for a real client in just a few weeks—and on a limited budget.

The team from the SOJC quickly got to work creating “Books & Beyond,” a campaign supporting EveryLibrary to raise awareness about book bans and funding cuts. They developed a banned book personality quiz and even designed a superhero—Elle—to advocate for access to stories for all ages.

Their clever campaign earned honorable mention in the competition, placing them in the top 12 nationwide! To read more about the competition, the team’s “Books & Beyond” campaign, and what the SOJC team learned from the experience, click the link in our bio!

Meet Betsy Plank, the first lady of public relations and a true industry pioneer! During her 63-year career, she racked up a long list of firsts for women in the world of PR.

Her public relations career took off in 1960 with Edelman, where she served as executive vice president and treasurer. In 1963 she became the first female president of the Publicity Club of Chicago, and in 1967 she helped create the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) to help students advance their knowledge of public relations. This achievement earned her the title “godmother of PRSSA.” 👏

But that’s not all! She served as head of staff for Illinois Bell (now SBC Communications Inc.), co-chaired the 1987 Commission on Undergraduate Public Relations Education, and eventually founded her own public relations agency in Chicago, Betsy Plank Public Relations.
Plank’s remarkable 63-year career didn’t just earn her a spot in the University of Alabama’s Communication Hall of Fame—it opened doors for women everywhere to pursue their own careers in the industry.

Meet Daniel Santoyo, a public relations major from Hood River, Oregon. When he transferred to the SOJC last year, he wasn’t sure what direction his academic career would take him. But, after taking several introductory courses, Santoyo decided to dive headfirst into all the great things the SOJC has to offer!

Daniel credits Professor Dean Mundy with his passion for PR and for helping him discover the diverse career opportunities the major can provide. His time in Allen has also drawn him into the world of radio broadcasting and audio production. He’s involved with UO radio station KWVA and the SOJC Audio Club, a student group that’s helping him learn how sound design can bring stories to life.

“There can be many components of creating audio pieces that can feel daunting or unfamiliar, but Audio Club has been a space where we can try anything and everything when it comes to audio.
From workshops to guest speakers, it’s been a great place to foundationally develop audio production skills beyond the classroom,” Sanyoto told us.

His love for sound extends far beyond the SOJC. Daniel loves music and concerts and has been able to attend shows featuring artists like Gracie Abrams, Dua Lipa, and Train. Maybe you’ll see him at the next show you’re at. If you do, be sure to stop and say hello!

The Heart of Networking, Connections & Relationships, pt. 1 ❤️

For our next video series, our team decided to take a focus on why connections matter within the world of PR. Whether it’s building trust with your clients, engaging with your audience or staying true to your own professional growth, relationships, and keeping said relationships, are at the core of what we do.

Senior Jillian Gray, chapter president for PRSSA at the University of Oregon, shares why networking isn’t just about who you know but about the meaningful relationships you create along the way. ✨

Watch to hear her take on why building a strong network of peers can shape your future success! 🎤 And stay tuned, as we continue this series next week with one of Oregon Accelerator’s operations team members, Jaeden Gordon.
