The landscape of pain awareness in the training & behavior industry has changed dramatically.

I know it doesn't always feel like it.

But less than 5 years ago, Pain Awareness Month was basically unheard of in our corner of the internet. Now there's pain awareness education all day, every day, 365 days a year.

That is because of you!

There has been no systemic support for Pain Awareness in our industry. Many vets do not value our profession. The entire change of the landscape is because of your commitment to dogs & their humans.

I'm so fucking proud of you!

Tag your favorite pain aware behavior professionals below!!

(I am sorry if I forgot to tag you & will tag more people as I remember 🫣)

September is pain awareness month!!!!! How fitting that Indie is currently in a rough flare 🫩

We cannot decide how bad someone’s pain is or isn’t!

ALWAYS approach behavior with curiosity and exploring the context

Plz contact a trainer and vet if you suspect pain!

I don’t have much content planned for the month seeing as my capacity is maxed out as a parent and managing a dog with chronic pain. I’ve got folks tagged who have the spoons to provide the education!

Lolz ran out of tags but usernames are correct and searchable!

A letter from our Executive Director:

This week, the Clearlake animal shelter changed hands, and the conditions the new operators found were heartbreaking. One of our team members said it’s the worst she’s seen in 15 years in animal welfare.

Our team brought back 30 dogs and puppies. Distressing does not begin to describe the state of these dogs. Many of them had to be transported in the crate they had been living in, filled with excrement and urine, and emaciated to the point that we cannot estimate how long they had been neglected. Our veterinary team worked late into the night to assess and begin treatment. It is likely most of them have giardia and potentially other conditions requiring isolation and immediate, extensive treatment, including test-positive cases of parvovirus in several of the puppies, a highly infectious and fatal disease with no specific cure.

We have two mama dogs with puppies. One mom had five neonates nursing desperately as she dug into a full bowl of food. What is most remarkable is how sweet these dogs are despite the conditions they were living in. Each time a dog came out of the transport van, large or small, it was with tail wagging and friendly sniffing.

These dogs are just beginning their healing journey. After enduring neglect, starvation, and harsh exposure, they now need intensive medical care, nourishment, and patience to recover in both body and spirit.

This level of rehabilitation goes far beyond our normal resources—and we can’t do it alone. Financial donations are urgently needed, along with food, treats, towels, and blankets.

💛 Your support will provide lifesaving medical treatment, full bellies, warm bedding, and the gentle human connection these dogs need to learn to trust again.

I could not be prouder of our team. Every single person here stepped up to make it work, including the long drives, late nights, and extensive cleaning. Responding to something like this, no matter how heartbreaking, is why we are here. I know that so many of you feel the same way, and I deeply appreciate your ongoing participation and support.
