📣Honored to share that Songs from the Beit Midrash is on this year’s @grammys ballot in the brand new Best Traditional Folk Album category!

This new category carves out space for music drawn from inherited folk traditions - lifting up the role song plays as a language for communicating cultural heritage and anchoring communal connection. I am grateful to share this music more widely with the @recordingacademy community, and bring the sounds of Jewish song, prayer, and creative energy into the ears of artists and creators passionate about song as a vehicle of communal expression!

Thank you to the @grammys and @recordingacademy for creating this space to build musical connections, to the team who worked together to put this album out, to @hadarinstitute and our label Rising Song Records, and to all who are listening and voting this season! First round voting runs from October 12-22nd - thanks for considering!

Matir Asurim is now streaming wherever you listen to music.

What is your favorite paragraph from the prayerbook? Which paragraph perplexes you the most? The second paragraph of the Amidah, known as the Gevurot (mights) paragraph, delights and challenges me. What is your relationship with this prayer?

I hope this new melody helps you connect with the text and with divine power in new ways.

Text:

Mekhayei meytim berakhamim rabim,
[G-d], You invigorate bodies with mercy’s flow,

somekh noflim verofeh kholim,
You support us in falling. You heal us in sickness.

umatir asurim, umekayem emunato lisheyney afar.
You free us from compulsion. You keep faith with those now dead.

Mi khamokha, ba’al gevurot?
In your might, no one can compare with You.

Umi domeh lakh, melekh meymeet umekhayey umatzmiakh yeshu’a?
You deal out life and death. Yet in all this, You make salvation grow.

-lyrics from the Amidah prayer, interpretive translation by Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi.

Renew our days, as in the past.
A renewal we always know to be possible.
