Mental Vacation Recordings has been a label for almost 1 whole year and in those almost 12 months we’ve done 10 release (and 2 shows) ranging from Beatdown to Hyperpop! We’ve got more releases planned for next year starting with a banger double cassette release from one of South Wales finest 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 thanks to all the bands that worked with us this year and big thanks to @eggy.tapes , @hollowliferecords and @betrayedbyliferecords for the help getting started and @ninepercenttokyo for the trust with our first release! See you all next year with the @mentalpressureband demo being sent out early January!

Queercore is surely the most vibrant & exciting scene in Birmingham right now, & @centrala_space is its two-stepping, D-beating heart. A new Birmingham band, @eyeglasshc, had their first gig there last week & asked me to go along to take some photos. The pleasure was all mine. They were part of a line-up of diverse hardcore and thrash, organised by @0121queercore & @pinknoizepromo with a crowd that embodied all that's best about DIY hardcore scenes.

The things this venue is doing are a beautiful showcase of heavy music’s power to build communities that generate powerful positive visions of what our society could be. There’s a counter-cultural intensity to every Queercore night that's impossible to resist. In times like ours there’s obviously anger bursting from the stacks of amps, but there’s also an infectious joy - cathartic expression of community that feels, in this context of aural overload, like staring at the black clouds’ silver linings till your retinas are seared away.

Birmingham has a long history of scenes & movements that get praised to the skies years after their heydays (think Grindcore at The Mermaid), including by people who admit to regretting they weren’t actually aware of them at the time. Let’s help make sure that doesn’t happen with Queercore: be there while the scene is rising.

Events are donation based with a NOTAFLOF policy (no-one turned away for lack of funds). The next event is this weekend & it’s going to be great. I’d urge everyone who believes in what this scene stands for to make it out & dance/mosh/stomp your Sunday away.
