Some scenes from @gaybowltwincities - of which I served as Director of the event. Gay Bowl XXVI has been over 2 years in the making. Thousands of hours that my team spent planning, fundraising, coordinating, marketing, and collaborating came to fruition this past weekend, and the event was a smashing success. 2000+ athletes, referees, volunteers, and attendees joining together - LGBTQ+ community and Allies alike. 24 fields 254 games 104 teams from over 25 US + Canadian cities 4 nights of events and 3 days of play It was an honor to collaborate with and be supported by the @vikings, @ngffl, @nscsports, our sports medics from @nwhsuclinics, nearly 100 volunteers, two LiveNation venues @uptowntheatermn @fillmorempls, the City of Minneapolis, and even our Governor! Over two years we fundraised nearly $120k to pull this off, almost all of it from MN based orgs + small donors, during a time where corporate giving to inclusive causes is down 62%. The weather was perfect, the tournament ran smoothly with beautiful playing fields, and we had an awesome vendor village setup with food trucks, a beer tent, and photo activations that allowed for camaraderie and connection. Our opening party featured members from the Minnesota Vikings org, and a message from Gov. Walz. Minnesota “set the gold standard” for volunteering according to our national board - we had dozens of friendly faces greeting athletes, directing traffic, refilling water jugs, setting up and tearing down, and running supplies. I’m so proud of the journey this has been, but even more proud of my team(s), my league (@mngffl), and my city. Gay Bowl is a special atmosphere that brings inclusion and sport into one place every year, and it was such an honor to bring it to life and bring so many folks into that atmosphere for the first time. Going to have a 9-12 month rehab souvenir as I recover from the torn Achilles I suffered while playing, but hopefully it allows me to reflect even more on how amazing of a journey this has been. 😌 There are too many people to thank for all the support and encouragement.
