“Constructivism fascinates,
Time and line in space
Look at modern cities
It’s all over the place!”

(Walk through central London Wonky. Why do the modern buildings and urban spaces look so different to the architecture and places built before World War II? Of course, the bomb-damaged city had to be recreated as something new. But what should ‘new’ look and feel like?

Do not underestimate the impact of the Constructivists Wonky. Everywhere you go, in every modern city, all over the world, the principles described by this movement define where you are and how you relate to what’s around you.

From 20th century Russia, these ideas permeated thinking everywhere, in so many spheres of activity: art, design, typography, materials science, architecture and even urban planning. If you live in a high rise building, the chances are the foundations were conceived on Constructivist principles.

This piece of sculpture, by maestro Naum Gabo, (1890-1977) was made at the beginning of the 1960’s - quite late in his career. Gabo demonstrates the viability and beauty of Constructivist ideas in material form. It’s even there in the title, ‘Linear Bas Relief on Black Perspex Base’.

He is using space as a material with transparency and openness. He draws in space with lines. In all his work, we see him replacing volume with tensioned threads which form geometric planes. He makes the object seem to be in motion, to be kinetic, with the effect of rhythm and transformational changes, even in stationary objects. Like buildings.

With experiments in new materials, like steel-reinforced concrete and glass technology we had a revolution which extended way beyond a political and philosophical way of thinking. It changed the spaces and experience of modern life .

Look at any contemporary structure and the space mapped out around it and you will see how these ideas evolved. It’s a universal, rational, language striving for clarity and ultimately, elegance.

Sadly not all architects and urban planners had Gabo’s aesthetic sense or his hunger for beauty. But that high rise apartment building or office block in front of you - that’s Constructivism constructed right there Wonky.)

SKETCH OF A COSTUMED INSPIRED BY EMPIRE STATE PLAZA. CONSTRUCTIVISM
project for studies

I have always perceived architecture as rhythm and structure. In this costume, I aimed to convey the same effect—strict geometry of the facade, vertical tension of lines. The structured upper part references the building’s massive geometric forms, while the elongated silhouettes below continue its dynamic flow.

The main goal was to translate the principles of Constructivism into clothing, creating a design where architectural logic merges with the movement of the body. It is an exploration of balance between rigid structure and fluid form, between the urban environment and individuality.

British Constructionists, most active in 1950s, were an influential art group inspired by Russian Constructivism. One of its leaders, Victor Pasmore, designed the new town of Peterlee, original plans for which had been proposed by the Russian-British architect Berthold Lubetkin.
