Deep in the Welsh countryside is a little known relic from mining past ⛏️

this waterwheel is one of only two surviving examples of its kind in Europe this one was used for a copper, zinc and lead mine

Early History & Ownership

• 1700s: First worked around 1700 by the Company of Mine Adventures, followed by the Flintshire Mining Company through 1760.
• 1853–1869: Restarted briefly in 1853, then worked by brothers Thomas and Henry Jones until 1869.
• 1870: Taken over by Mr. Adam Mason, who oversaw its longest and most active period of development.

The Underground Waterwheel & Expansions

• 1871: Sinking began below the adit level with a winze to the 12-fathom level.

• Underground Wheel: A 16-foot diameter wooden waterwheel was assembled underground by candlelight inside a worked-out stope to handle pumping and winding. This allowed the mine to be deepened by another 12 fathoms (roughly 72 feet / 25 meters)

northampton general lunatic asylum, st andrews hospital

it opened its doors on august 1, 1838, as the northampton general lunatic asylum. in later years it was renamed st andrews hospital. this hospital was founded by public subscription to offer humane, moral treatment for private and pauper psychiatric patients.

in the late 20th century, it grew significantly, adding specialised care units, including Spencer House, which was opened by princess diana (princess of wales).

the nhs ordered the removal of over two hundred inpatients earlier this year due to safety concerns.

this institution had a number of ‘famous’ names across the years, including Violet Gibson, the irish woman who shot and wounded Benito Mussolini in 1926, spent the remainder of her life institutionalised there.

ICI nylon plant 1960s power station control room.

one of the more run down and vintage control rooms i’ve seen from the many i’ve done.

operational in the 1960s to produce nylon and nitric acid, the plant operated for 12 years before closing in 1981, with a large majority of its structure gone in 1995.

the only part left of the nylon works is the control room, which would’ve been connected to the power station / turbine hall which have been demolished along with the cooling towers.

the turbines / turbine hall is shown in picture 3.
