Adrenaline. Anxiety. Fun. Paddling the Grand Canyon is as much about overcoming your fears as it is about running the rapids.

River Poetry #3

River Poetry Manifesto

We believe that rivers are poems in motion.
Every rapid, every eddy, every quiet pool speaks in rhythms older than language. Our project, River Poetry, is born from this conviction.

Together with Jacob Kastrup Haagensen, we bring rivers and words into dialogue. We set classical and contemporary poetry—verses from the greatest voices across cultures—against images of wild water, of kayaks and packrafts, of a community that finds joy in navigating currents. At first glance, the poems and the rivers may seem unrelated. But when they meet, they create unexpected harmonies. The river becomes the page; the poem becomes the soundtrack.

River Poetry is both playful and serious. It is a way of carrying poetry into places where it is rarely expected—into the roar of a rapid, the shimmer of sunlight on water, the laughter of friends gathered at a take-out. By weaving words with rivers, we aim to release poetry from the classroom and the page, and let it drift, leap, and cascade into the wild.

Our goal is simple: to spread poetry, to see the world with fresh eyes, and to share the beauty of a growing community that lives on the water.

River Poetry is not only about literature or sport. It is about the joy of discovery, the mingling of art and nature, and the belief that every journey down a river is itself a poem waiting to be read.

Yesterday, I finally got the chance to try out my new packraft, the Valkyrie V3. Originally, I planned to join the Knäred Whitewater Festival and paddle on Krokån, but unfortunately, the lack of rain left the water level too low for anything other than the bigger drops—not ideal for learning to handle a new whitewater craft.

Instead, I paddled at one of my local lakes, Mollasjön. I hiked through the beautiful autumn beech woods in the nature reserve and inflated the boat at a small jetty.

The Valkyrie is definitely the fastest and best-tracking packraft I’ve ever tried. Paddling on the lake was quick and less frustrating than with other packrafts. However, it does take some time to get used to, as it’s sensitive to edging, which occasionally caused it to turn when I tried to paddle straight. I have a lot of practice ahead with edging and trusting its excellent secondary stability.

My motivation for getting the Valkyrie was to become a more technical boater, tapping into its potential for advanced edging. When I bought the Wolverine, I had a similar goal—improving boat control to overcome my anxiety after a few rough swims. Now, the Valkyrie is my next step toward becoming a better paddler. I’m really looking forward to taking it on the rapids!

PREPARING FOR A RIVER TRIP: next Tuesday I’m heading north to catch the spring flood and paddle the river Rånden in Härjedalen, Sweden. My 10 year old dry suit has been leaking recently so it’s time for some repair. On one of the sleeves there were no less than five pin holes that need to be taking care of. So armed with scissor, aqua seal, alcohol and patch material is did some patching. My spray skirt was also in need for some repair service which I fixed with gorilla tape, needle and detain flush. As we always in between swims I hope next one will be drier. 😀

It’s amazing how much a river changes with higher water levels. The bridge is almost too low to go under, and besides the big waves just behind the bridge, the rapids seem much more washed out at this water level. Mörrumsån river at 70m3/s. #thisispackrafting #boundbyadventure #whitewater #packrafting #whitewaterpackrafting @aquabound

Mörrumsån river at 70 m3/s means flooded conditions. We put in at the power plant dam just south of Hemsjö. The first kilometer or so after the dam it like paddling in a forest with trees in the middle of the rivers as brinks and small island is under water. The rapids wasn’t particularly demanding but you have we had to pay attention and navigate right to avoid getting stuck. #thisispackrafting #packraftingsweden #whitewater #boundbyadventure @aquabound

Happy new year everyone! New year is always a goof opportunity to looking back at the old year and forward towards the next. 2023 started well with a new year trip to Krokån which has a absurd high volume for my favorite creek in Halland, Sweden. All the small rapids was super fun but the big rapids like Högränna (on the first photo) was a monster. Also fun to paddle in a snow storm.

After Kråkån we had the yearly trip to Mörrumsån in Blekinge. We had a base camp, I got to use my tent stove (which was amazing) and we had a fantastic trip. On the photo we see my fellow @aquabound ambassador @injuringeternity paddling around in Vitsköle rapid.

2023 was one of the rainiest years here in southern Scandinavia which should make paddling fun and exciting. Unfortunately spring was very dry which effected our trip to Råneälv. A lot of bottom scraping and dull rapids but fantastic company. @johan_gronblad was in his right element and had made a Dane mocking t-shirt special for me. @arvidbaath did an amazing job organizing and paddling the trip using his old army contacts for beta and company on the river.

I didn’t get paddle anymore this summer despite all the water that arrived just after the trip to Råneälv but 2023 was also the summer very I got to take my son Ib on his first hiking trip. An fantastic experience for both him and me. We went to the Abisko area for a 7 day trip (6 night in a tent). I’d also made a short film from the trip that premiered at @nordicadventurefilmfestival in early December. The film will be released in 2024. Something to look forward till.

Before the festival I’d also manage to go on a trip to Säveån. It was as always a fun experience (despite the falling trees that blocked a rapid). @moramicke joined the trip after his move to western Sweden.

Looking forward into 2024 I’ve already have paddled plans. Mörrumsån is up for a revisit in February. We are planning to go back to Råneälv to really enjoy the rapids and the third Scandinavia roundup is up, this time in Sweden.

Being to Nordic adventure film festival really urged the longing to make a new longer adventure film. Therefor I’ll planning of finishing the Grand Canyon film!
