Being the founder of an indie beauty company means a lot of things, but sitting at a desk watching the dollars pile up in your bank account usually isn’t one of them.

The truth is that running a small skincare company is equal parts hard work, love, problem-solving, and fun.

It’s thinking about payroll and cash flow while doing everything you can to provide a truly livable wage and meaningful benefits for your team.

It’s believing so deeply in the products you make that you’re willing to keep choosing the slow, steady path year after year.

It’s showing up in your own skin—and occasionally very few items of clothing—when you need the photo and there’s no model around to take your place.

And, lucky for me, it means working alongside some of the most talented, capable, wonderful humans I know.

I’m increasingly tired of the perfection and endless curation we’re all fed online. I’m much more interested in the real thing: people making something with care, figuring it out as they go, and trying to build a business they can actually be proud of.

That’s the messy truth of being an indie brand right now. It’s not always glamorous, but I’m grateful every day that I get to put my heart into this company, this team, and the people who keep choosing what we make. (Thank you, Osmia customers!!)

And shout out to my fellow founders—I see you, and I so appreciate your beautiful work in the world!!
