Urmila P @ursk8kid spent hours in the freezing Swiss Alps, with the lifts closed, the pistes being groomed, and no permission in sight for the sunset ride they wanted to take. But four hours later, hiding from the piste-grooming machines and snowboarding into the clouds while donning an Indian skirt and top, they finally made their way down the mountain, almost as if they were on a James Bond-esque mission.

At 17, she had a choice: let financial struggles end her sporting dreams or find a way to fund them herself. Urmila Pable chose the latter.

Today, she’s winning medals and pushing boundaries in skateboarding and snowboarding.

After losing her father in Grade 5, Urmila was raised by her mother alongside her brother.
As she grew older, she took up a job to support her dreams, refusing to let financial hardship decide how far she could go.

From representing India at the World Skateboarding Championships to winning bronze for Maharashtra at the 2025 Khelo India Winter Games, her journey has been anything but ordinary.

Traditional attire is beautiful. It fills many with a sense of pride, yet it is not particularly aerodynamic for activities like skating. Could this movement be a symbolic representation of overcoming the decorated systems that restrict feminine agency?
