Ronin Kai Karate

Shihan was unavailable due to business, so Senpai Daniel stepped in and taught conditioning and kumite.

Serendipity hit — it was just the two of us training.

We worked through moving combinations and drills, including tsuki-tsuki, hidari-migi kagi-zuki, then reversing the sequence while moving — one drill among many, all focused on greater fluidity in kumite.

Senpai Daniel has become a good friend and a consummate karate practitioner whom I’ve known for many years. He has trained in karate for over 25 years and holds the rank of Yondan — fourth-degree black belt.

His training path goes back through Kanreikai Karate in New York City and his dojo in Uruguay. Among others, he trained with Shihan Maria, whose 106th Street dojo I now also attend.

In karate, you learn that things become full circle. It is not a very big world. Everyone and everything connects.

That path also connected him to Shihan Michelle Gay, who was Sensei Michelle at that time and later opened KWK, where I first met Senpai Daniel around 2019 at the 18th Street dojo.

After COVID, KWK moved from 18th Street to 15th Street, and Senpai Daniel continued training with us. I was often doing two to three classes in a row; afterward, we would stay another hour training specifically for kumite.

I was preparing for my Shodan test — first-degree black belt — which included 15 two-minute rounds of kumite.

Senpai Daniel taught me to fight smarter: conserve energy, avoid burning out early, stay fluid, and become more strategic. He also helped me translate formal karate technique into practical kumite movement — shorter, sharper, more economical, and less overextended.

Before karate, Senpai Daniel was a professional dancer in Uruguay with Ballet Nacional Sodre, the National Ballet of Uruguay, based in Montevideo. You can feel that history in the way he moves, teaches, and understands the body.

I have always regarded him as a sensei-level practitioner and teacher.

After being away in Uruguay over the winter, he is now back in NYC training.

It was an excellent class. Good spirit. Focus. Technique. Real training.

Osu.

OLD SCHOOL.

Not about the past.
About standards that still hold.

Two men in their 60s, still showing up, still putting in the work, still refining the craft.
Different paths, same principle—discipline built over a lifetime.

No shortcuts.
Just time, pressure, and repetition—applied wherever life demands it.

This isn’t nostalgia.
This is continuity.

Training last night with Senpai Daniel — 4th Degree Black Belt (Yondan).

Freshly returned from Uruguay, Senpai Daniel spends his winter months immersed in family, friends, and karate training. With the return of warmer days, he resumes his training and teaching in New York, deepening his path.

Before his Kyokushin journey, Senpai Daniel was a distinguished professional ballet dancer with Ballet Nacional del Sodre, performing at an elite level for many years. His martial arts training began in Uruguay, seamlessly continuing upon his move to New York.

Five years ago, during my intensive preparation for shodan, Senpai Daniel devoted himself to my training. Frequently staying after class for over an hour, he guided me meticulously through preparation for the rigorous 15 rounds of kumite—sharing strategies, wisdom, and the essence of true Kyokushin spirit. His teachings laid a robust foundation, enabling me to navigate each of those 15 two-minute rounds with clarity, endurance, and unwavering control, leading me to achieve my shodan.

Tonight, at Ronin Kai Karate Dojo on Manhattan’s West Side, Senpai Daniel returned to lead an exemplary class.

A small but focused group: one green belt, myself, and Senpai.

Kumite techniques. Pad drills. Consistent, demanding pressure.

Within the intensity, brief resets—deep stretching, spinal opening, knuckle and finger push-ups—then immediately back into technique and pad work.

Precise. Challenging. Powerful.

It’s great to have him back.
