Meet the Board Monday 🌟: Johnny Stevens, Student Affairs Chair

1. What inspired you to join the PRCA Board?

I relocated to Mobile over a decade ago and knew absolutely no one in the area. I knew I needed a place to meet my local peers, develop professionally and connect with my new community. I found PRCA, which quickly landed me my my first job in the city and so many other rewarding opportunities. I feel obligated to help make PRCA a positive professional environment for others as it has been for me, and serving on the board gives me an opportunity to do just that.

2. What PR skill do you think is most essential today?

Face-to-face communication and relationship-building skills seem to be disappearing in the modern workforce. More and more, the abilities to genuinely connect to others, to build meaningful relationships with colleagues and clients, and to clearly express one’s self through succinct, authentic in-person communication are becoming a lost art form. PRCA helps refocus our efforts on critical industry skills, such as these, which is why the organization is so vital to ongoing professional development.

3. How do you unwind after a busy week?

When I’m not working, I can usually be found at one of my teenage son’s many sporting events or practices, or on the water in my boat. The ocean breeze is relaxing.

4. What is a fun fact people may not know about you?

I spent many years flying missions on Air Force aircraft and have gone faster than the speed of sound three different times.

5. What do you love most about being a part of PRCA?

My favorite part of PRCA is the wonderful people that make up this important group. The professionals are very warm, friendly and helpful, which was a big reason I kept coming to meetings early on. I’m a big advocate for this group to everyone I meet and I’m excited to share my love of PRCA as the faculty advisor for the University of South Alabama’s new PRCA student chapter this fall.

Something I’ve learned in life is that nothing worth having comes easy. We need others helping us out, but we also need to put in the effort on our own to position ourselves for others to help us.

I love sharing my story and the journey I’ve gone through to reach this point in my life.

Having opportunities to speak to hundreds of people is such a blessing and something that I love doing!

It looks easy on the surface, but it takes a lot of preparation and focus to make sure my keynote speeches are inspirational and encourages people to help one another.

Nothing I’ve achieved in life is without the help of others. That’s the reason I’m on the back cover of my book!😅 Cracks in the Wall by Ronnie Stallworth

PRCA Mobile is proud to partner with the University of South Alabama's Communications Department to launch USA's first-ever PRCA Student Chapter. A huge shoutout to South student, Emily Jansen for leading the charge at Comm Connect Day and helping fellow Jaguars learn about the benefits of joining PRCA and building their future in the communications field.
