✨ Here’s an excerpt from Bamyan by Philippe Hersant, performed at the 3rd Stage of the USA International Harp Competition! This piece is one of my favorites and holds such special memories from the competition🥹 Bamyan tells the story of the city of Bamyan in Afghanistan and reflects on the impact of war, which inspired the composer during his visit. 🎶 Watch the full performance in my first YouTube channel video, link in bio!

I found this amazing photo of Ms. McDonald dated January 27, 1964, on Shutterstock, and liked it so much that I paid for a license to download it. The caption reads: "American harpist Susann Mcdonald in England for a concert with her harp in the back of her Citroën 2CV." How fabulous is this?! Yesterday we lost Susann McDonald, Distinguished Professor of Harp (Emeritus) at IU Jacobs School of Music. There was never any doubt of the impact she had on the harp world, and seeing the numerous tributes from friends and former students only proves that even more.     Ms. McDonald was an extremely accomplished harpist—recording, touring, and performing all over the world. She also loved sharing her knowledge through her teaching. After leading the harp departments at the University of Southern California, University of Arizona, and Juilliard School of Music, she was appointed to the IU JSoM faculty in 1981. She stayed at IU JSoM until her retirement in 2016. During this time, in addition to guiding the next generation of harpists, she founded the USA International Harp Competition (1989), created valuable pedagogical resources, and published multiple collections of transcriptions and original compositions.    Many of us currently in the IU harp studio did not have the opportunity to meet her or directly study with her, but her musical contribution has had such a tremendous impact that we still feel strongly connected to her. A number of her students became leading teachers around the world, sharing Miss McDonald’s legendary knowledge with so many of us. Our current Professor of Harp at IU JSoM, Elzbieta (Ela) Szmyt, who was her student, continues Susann McDonald’s legacy by teaching us how to play beautifully, how to create a musical story, and how to be confident in our individual voice as a harpist. As the IU Harp Department, we are grateful to be a part of this incredible community, and we are proud to carry on Ms. McDonald’s harp wisdom and her life’s work.
