The Bannockburn Ledger

We have been busy working away in the background for the last 5 years on the Caledonia Tartan Project.

Recorded in the “Tartan Register” as No 43, Caledonia, Kidd which was registered in 1817 by Clan Macpherson Museum

We have recently managed to turn up records from the National Library of Scotland with new findings now verified by The Scottish Tartans Authority that the date line has just taken a significant shift to an earlier period.

The Scottish tartan ban was officially known as the Dress Act 1746 to 1782

* Enacted: 1 August 1746
* Effective: 1 August 1747
* Purpose: To prohibit the wearing of Highland dress, including tartan, in much of Scotland.
* Context: It followed the Jacobite Rising of 1745–46 and was intended to suppress Highland culture and Jacobite-associated symbols.
* Repealed: 1782, by the Act of 1782 (often called the Repeal of the Dress Act).

Importantly for your Kidd tartan research, the ban did not prohibit the manufacture, sale or export of tartan cloth in general. That distinction is potentially very significant when looking at the Wilson’s records and the Kidd/Kid sett recorded in 1771.

It does however shift the tartan from a “Highland Revival Period” to an earlier period during the ban.

Our research is ongoing with thanks to all involved.
