For this year’s University of East London and University of South Florida symposium our students collaborated on the MARS project. The MARS project explores how we can deliver food security and mental wellbeing to isolated communities, such as those affected by natural disasters or new human colonies on the Moon. USF students researched on and off-earth approaches, and UEL students took this research and turned it into practical design solutions for the city of Iskenderun in Turkey, which suffered an earthquake in 2023, and the new moon base proposed for NASA’s Artemis X mission. Congratulations to all and special thanks to Dr Joseph Dorsey at USF #sustainability #foodsecurity #moon #mars #earthquake #iskenderun #nasa #artemis #landscapearchitecture #chooselandscape #uel #patelcollege @universityofeastlondon @usfpcgs

Our friend and colleague Miguel Maysonet's words below capture more of my sentiments for what we accomplished at Oktoberfest and cultivating for a more sustainable future: This post is a little late, but I've had the chance to work or some exciting projects lately and I want to take a moment to reflect and aive thanks. At Oktoberfest Tampa 2025, I had the chance to help coordinate sustainability efforts alongside Nick Ewing who I can confidently say is not iust a qood man - but a great one. When he first called me about the proiect, I was half asleep. I meant to say "Hey, what's good, man?" but it came out as "Hev aood man." And honestly, it fits, Watching Nick move through the festival like a maestro - setting people at ease, listening to comms, and managing complex loaistics with clarity and calm - I saw iust how much care and leadership he brings to every detail. From my understanding, this was the first festival in the U.S. to use an Insinkerator svstem to capture food waste for biodigesters, turning what would be landfill-bound into nutrient-rich digestate to support gardens. Alongside that, we conducted a waste assessment to better understand pain points and find opportunities to close more loops - all while keeping the steins raised high. I'm currently working on the initial sustainability report to document it all Huge thanks to those who showed up to help bring this work to life Zachary Luke (a friend since elementary school, and a ride-or-die throuah it all), LJ from HCC's Office of Sustainability, Tasnim from USF PCGS, Justine from ArtisTREE Gardens, and Thomas Henry Culhane, Ph.D., who helped reframe "waste" to a resource through a systems thinking lens To the kitchen staff and production team - thank you for your curiosity, openness, and collaboration. The conversations we had around process improvements and innovation were just as energizing as the music and crowc around us. And thank you to Oktoberfest Tampa for giving us the space to run this in the background. The eneray from the crowd. the crew. and the culture carried us throuah - and the thanks always go on. One person can't do this alone and with this kind of community..you never have to.

Its an honor to be recognized as the Hillsborough County Partner involved in this incredible campaign for sustainability projects in our community. Our write-up from their team on what we are growing: https://givebutter.com/ArtisTREEGardens Cultivating Sustainability Through Art & Urban Organics At ArtisTREE Gardens, we believe that sustainability can be both practical and beautiful. We are a creative sustainability production company rooted in the Tampa Bay community, where we blend organic seasonal agriculture, regenerative design, and the arts into spaces that inspire, nourish, and connect people. Our work transforms existing properties into living, breathing eco-conscious spaces powered by seasonal harvests, pollinator-friendly gardens, renewable energy, and permaculture-based cuisine. Through programs like our Gardinners—immersive dining experiences combining local harvests with local art—we showcase how sustainability and culture can thrive side by side. Our Sustainability Programming With your support, we are expanding our Seasonal Foundational Curriculum. This initiative regeneratively develops urban spaces into eco-conscious community hubs. Our designs weave together fruit and vegetable gardens, composting systems, water conservation strategies, and renewable energy solutions—bringing beauty, biodiversity, and resilience into the heart of Tampa Bay. This work does more than plant seeds. It creates job opportunities in sustainability, improves public health through access to nutrient-dense food, advocates for local arts, and reduces reliance on fossil fuels and plastics. By cultivating closed-loop systems, we show that self-sufficiency is not only possible, but joyful. How Your Contribution Helps Funds raised through this campaign will directly support: Biodiversity expansion and organic outputs across our site Composting and water systems, including biodigesters and community drinking stations Storage, tools, and equipment for growing and production Educational content to share replicable sustainability practices across Tampa Bay Support for our dedicated team as we sustain and expand ongoing projects Our many thanks! Cheers!

In 1978, following a national energy crisis, former President Jimmy Carter created the Aquatic Species Program within the U.S. @energy department. Its mission: develop renewable transportation fuels from algae. Yes, you read that right — algae. The word may summon musings of the bright green pond scum painting your local lake, or of the ecological nightmare blooms that mar Florida waterbodies most summers. But, for some hopeful scientists, public officials and industry leaders, algae represented a more sustainable and self-reliant energy source that could fuel the nation’s future. Between 1978 and 1996, researchers within the federal Aquatic Species Program collected more than 3,000 strains of algae from across the U.S. Fifty-one of those strains, including four from Florida, were identified for their potential to create fuel. The team also proved the concept of long-term, reliable algae production in open ponds — the foundation for algae farms hoped to replace quadrillions of units of nonrenewable energy. Flash forward decades later. Algae biofuel has ridden a roller coaster of momentum and support, handicapped by technological and economic constraints. Researchers are split on its feasibility. Many industry players — including a handful of Florida startups — have tried and failed to wield its potential. Meanwhile, nutrient pollution continues to fuel harmful algal blooms that clog our state’s waterways, disrupt ecosystems and pose threats to surrounding communities. Despite the hurdles, algae biofuel’s promise persists — particularly in the Sunshine State, where many still hope the industry can thrive. Its commercial realization, though, remains a question mark. I wrote about Florida’s algae fuel conundrum in the March 2025 issue of @florida.trend - check it out online!🦠💦⛽️

🌍💡 My favorite part of this week was the lecture from Dr. @thculhane Associate Professor of Instruction at the @usfpcgs at the @usouthflorida On Thursday, he spoke to our @uva students and other interns at the @highatlasfoundation office about the functionality and operation of biodigesters, as well as their implementation worldwide. I was very skeptical of his work at the beginning of his presentation. I, along with many individuals my age, have a deep desire to alleviate the climate crisis. However, major corporations have contributed significantly to climate damage, making individual efforts to help the environment seem inconsequential. I kept listening to everything he was saying and thought how well-intentioned and productive it all sounded. Yet, how can personal efforts ever lead to worldwide climate alleviation? When I posed this question to him, he talked about the power of the consumer and how the biodigester is both economically and socially demanded worldwide. How simply introducing the concept can have ripple effects on communities around the world. As students, we are the best vessels for spreading this knowledge, as we merely desire to acquire knowledge and experience and to see the world and help individuals. This encouragement resonated with me, as my efforts interning with HAF have been primarily aimed at learning about cultures abroad and how to help people sustainably. 💬 “Business will come,” said Culhane. “Follow what you are passionate about, what you love, and the living will work itself out.” ___ @_mariakyriacou_ UVA Student & HAF Intern #Biodigesters #Biogas #RenewableEnergy #WasteManagement #CleanEnergy #HAF #UVA #HighAtlasFoundation #Sustainability #ClimateAction #Internship #YouthForChange #GlobalImpact
