✨ IRIS, scritto dallo spazio. 🌍

Provate anche voi sul sito della NASA! 🚀

Harnessing satellite tools to monitor landscapes more efficiently 🛰️🌱

USGS scientists tested a new way of using satellite data to map crops in California, improving our ability to efficiently monitor changes in these landscapes.

The team evaluated how well a 10-meter Satellite Embedding layer classified crop types in central California for the year 2020.

🛰️How it works:

A satellite embedding layer is essentially a compressed summary of lots of satellite information. Because it summarizes many data sources into a single layer, mapping tasks like crop classification are made faster and easier.

🌱 More accurate results, in less time:

The team found that the satellite embedding layer resulted in more accurate crop maps and used three times less computer power.

From rice to citrus, this approach can help us understand what’s growing where, supporting water planning, agricultural decisions, and land stewardship.

🌎💧 How can we better understand the rivers that shape our landscapes?

Yesterday was World Rivers Day, let's take a look at some of the rivers and landscapes captured by USGS Landsat.

🛰️ Landsat is jointly managed by NASA and the USGS, with the first satellite launched in 1972.

📅 The program has provided more than 50 years of consistent Earth observations, making it the longest continuous satellite record of Earth's land surface.

🌊 Landsat imagery helps track how river channels shift, how deltas grow and erode, and how floodplains and wetlands change over time.

💧 Paired with the streamflow, groundwater, and water use data USGS collects, Landsat imagery supports research on drought, flooding, water availability, and land use change across the Nation's watersheds.

🔁 This long-term, repeatable record allows scientists to compare the same river or landscape across decades, revealing patterns over time.

📷 4-5: Landsat 8 and 9 satellite imagery from August through October 2022 showing Horseshoe Bend, where the Colorado River curves through steep canyon walls and desert terrain.

📷 6-7: Landsat 8 and 9 satellite imagery from July and August 2022 showing the Columbia River Gorge, including the Columbia River, forested mountains, and developed areas along the river.

📷 8-9: Landsat 8 and 9 satellite imagery from May through July 2022 showing the Hudson River near New York City, including the river, dense urban development and Central Park.

The purpose of this lab assignment in Geography 365: Cartography was to really focus on applying terrain to the surface of a map with labeling. I think the terrain looks really great in terms of texturing. Something I did butcher was the labeling of roads. At this point in my learning, labeling was something I desperately needed to work on so it definitely is lacking here. I am a fan of how I did the title though because I made it slightly transparent making the terrain poke through a little.

This was a cartogram assignment. A cartogram is a type of map where the data is shown relative to the other sets of data by manipulating the size. In the 2019 US population dataset, each state is appropriately sized to the population size regardless of the states actual geographic scale. A good example is although Alaska is the biggest state, it is very small here because of its low population relative to California or New York. This was my first time using the software QGIS which is less intuitive than ArcGIS pro. The map elements are unfortunately more lackluster. The map needs to be more centered, title in frame, symbology could look more geographic, and labeling must be more organized. Scale bar, north arrow and legend are not necessary.

This was our second lab in Geography 365: Cartography and Geospatial Visualizations. The goal with this assignment was to create a nice and balanced layout with five projections of our choice. Each projection could not be super similar to the other, the symbology and fonts were up to our discretion, and we had to include graticules. I think the whole layout itself is balanced alright. There could be some improvements, but overall I like the protections I chose and the symbology. The operations for this lab overall were very simple, but the whole point was to make it look nice.

United States of America, from space. 🛰️

To celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, the USGS has created a new portrait of the nation using imagery from Landsat 8 and Landsat 9.

For more than 50 years, the @USGS and @NASA Landsat program has provided a continuous record of Earth’s changing land surface. This new mosaic showcases the incredible diversity of the United States, from the rainforests of the Pacific Northwest to the Everglades of Florida, from the Rocky Mountains to the agricultural heartland of the Great Plains.

It also continues a tradition that began in 1976, when Landsat imagery was used to create “Portrait U.S.A.” for the nation’s bicentennial.

But thanks to NASA’s Landsat program, there’s now a tiny patch of satellite imagery called “Chelsea at Home” floating around out there somewhere.

Come with me, and you’ll be in a world of pure imagination.

You ABSOLUTELY want to see it for yourself.

Tyndall Glacier, Chile update on project I worked on with @nasaearth. Published yesterday. Based on first image taken by an astronaut aboard the Int. Space Station on May 10, 2026. This marks 14 consecutive years working on projects with them.

From the Earth Obsersatory story-"Like most Patagonian glaciers, Tyndall has been shrinking since the end of the Little Ice Age about 150 years ago. Lago Geikie formed at Tyndall’s terminus around 1940, according to glaciologist Mauri Pelto of Nichols College, and gradually expanded as the ice retreated. Part of the glacier previously terminated in Lago Tyndall to the east, but thinning ice cut off that outlet by 2010, Pelto said. (The ice’s retreat also exposed bedrock along its eastern edge that contains scores of ichthyosaur fossils.)

Along with thinning, ice calving off the glacier’s front has reduced its volume. Tyndall has lost 2.2 kilometers (1.4 miles) in length since November 2022, Pelto said, following about a decade of limited retreat with considerable thinning. A significant calving event in March and April 2023 contributed to the recent uptick in ice retreat. ..The ice cliff at the terminus casts a substantial shadow, which can help scientists estimate the height of the glacier's front. Pelto's calculations, using information about the Sun’s position provided with the image, indicate that Tyndall's front loomed 30–40 meters (100–130 feet) above the lake surface in May 2026. "
