In 2023, Jozy Altidore said he would build the USMNT around Yunus Musah. He’s been so impressed by the midfielder.

Three years later, Musah is unlikely to make the World Cup squad. What went wrong?

That’s the question Altidore was asked on Unfiltered Soccer podcast this week.

“I’m a bit surprised, you know,” Altidore said.

“This is a guy that I felt like would continue to progress. I think he had all the ability and the tools.

“I would love to understand, like a lot of fans, kind of what went wrong there, and the sense of him being called up quite frequently to now one of the guys that’s on the fringe.

“I’d love to understand more about that, because I think he’s one of the guys I put in the category of, like, even like Gio Reyna, where they just offer something totally different, they can plug into a number of positions at a very high experience level.

“He’s been playing at Milan, Valencia, so I think he’s a guy, in my opinion, when you’re looking for a team of flexibility like a World Cup roster, you want a guy that can plug in everywhere.

“And I think he’s one of those guys, but hasn’t featured, and you know, I’d be really curious to understand why, because again, seems like a bubbly guy, nice to be around, but you know, has been missed around the team over the last few rosters.”

Musah hasn’t played for the USMNT since the Nations League games in March of 2025.

Still 23, he’s been on loan at Atalanta this season and played 26 games across all competitions.

Is it a mistake for Mauricio Pochettino to ignore a player like Musah? 👀

“I would say the standard has gotten better, for sure. It still needs to continue to improve.”

Former USMNT goalkeeper Brad Guzan left MLS in 2008 to challenge himself in the Premier League.

Nine years later, he returned and he’s been happy to see a lot of improvements.

“I remember when [David] Beckham came in, and you know, the team I played for Chivas USA, we used the same stadium,” Guzan said.

“Our locker rooms were down the hallway, and so, like, everything was just magnified times 10.

“When Beckham walked through the door, you had Tom Cruise coming to games, and you had all these A-list celebrities that were in and amongst the stadium.

“You’re like, ‘Oh my gosh, this is this is crazy.’

“And then all of a sudden, you fast forward to [Lionel] Messi, and you know what he’s done for the league, and probably elevated it to another level.

“Also the league itself, the amount of teams that have now entered into the mix, the support from owners, and the willingness to spend money both on facilities as well as players, the sport itself has certainly now taken that next step as a general standard has gone higher across the league.

“I would say the standard has gotten better, for sure. It still needs to continue to improve.

“Before, it was players one through four are great, and then there’s a bit of a drop off.

“Then it’s one through six, one through nine, maybe your first 11 are decent enough, then it’s, you know, your first 13 players.

“But you know, you need to get it to a level of Premier League status of your first 25 players, your first team players are all playing for their national teams, they’re all competing on the biggest stages.”

While Christian Pulisic is listening to country music that brings him peace, his USMNT teammate Antonee Robinson has a very different taste in music.

He admits he’s been listening to a lot of reggaeton and Bad Bunny.

That type of music instantly takes him to a happy place.

“I’m more of an Afro house and reggaeton kind of guy at the moment,” Robinson said in an interview with The Cooligans.

“Just a lot of Bad Bunny at the moment. In my mind, my happiest place is like a beach club in a sunny place.

“If you’d have seen the weather [in London], it goes from sun to hailstone to wind to being from 70 degrees to 40 degrees. It’s nonstop.

“So I’d rather picture myself like by a pool and sun.”

Robinson has gone through a lot of ups and downs recently. He missed 16 Premier League games this season due to injuries and missed all of USMNT games in 2025.

But he’s worked so hard at the gym to fix his issues and get back to full fitness. It was an emotional moment yesterday when he scored his first ever Premier League goal.

Let’s see how the 28-year-old looks at the World Cup. One thing for sure, he’d be bumping to Bad Bunny to hype himself up before the big moment.

USMNT left-back Max Arfsten reveals one of his goals: playing in a top five league in Europe.

“I’m gonna keep working hard to get there,” he said.

“That’s where I want to get, because that’s the top, the highest level of football.

“And it’s like, how high can I take this thing? That’s always been my goal. And I want to play in the top five league.

“To be honest, I know that’s ambitious, and I’m not saying you could just jump from MLS to the Prem.

“But just really, I want to play for a team that gives me the opportunity to play my game. And yeah, that’s my goal, for sure.”

Arfsten has faced a lot of criticism from USMNT fans in the last 12 months. How does he feel about it?

“When I first got involved with the national team, like, I would see all that stuff,” he said.

“If I see something good, I get happy about it, then if I see something negative, I get down about it.

“And then I was like, there’s no point in trying to, because it doesn’t matter, someone’s gonna say something that’s their opinion, so I don’t pay attention to it anymore.

“But I mean, I’m open-minded, I understand there’s definitely things I need to be better at, and there’s things that I excel in, and like any player, like I’m ambitious and hungry to make the strengths even better, and to get my floor even higher.

“So in this moment in time I’m ambitious, I’m hungry, and I just want any coach I’m playing for to know, like, if you put me in the game, I can definitely try and make something happen on the dribble or create chances and just be a dawg for you.”

Which league would you want to see Arfsten play in when he leaves Columbus Crew and MLS? 👀

After 157 appearances in the Premier League, Antonee Robinson finally scored his first Premier League yesterday. And you can see how emotional he was.

The emotions are not just from scoring his first Premier League goal, but because his first goal of the Premier League came after so many up and downs moments for him recently, where he’s battled injury issues.

He’s played 21 out of 37 Premier League games this season, missing 16 games with injuries.

“The rehab didn’t go as smoothly as I hoped it would,” Robinson said in an interview with The Athletic back in March.

“So even when I came back and was trying to train and play, I still wasn’t quite ready.

“It just seemed like there was kinda no light at the end of the tunnel.”

Robinson sought outside help for rehab. He tried different methods to regain health and fitness.

He admitted there were also “a series of injections, and things like that, to try and let it heal.”

Finally, in December, Robinson started to play regularly again. He also returned to play for the USMNT in March, after missing all of 2025 with injuries.

“Thankfully, I feel like I’m past that point now,” Robinson said.

He has also taken it upon himself to ensure that the knee concerns don’t reappear.

“I try, off the pitch, [to] make sure I’m doing as much as I can to be in the best physical shape,” the 28-year-old added.

“I’m the first person at the training ground, because I know I need to do a lot in the gym before I train. In the evening, when I put the kids to bed, I’m doing more stuff to try and get myself in good shape.

“It’s been a long road, but I’m feeling really good. I felt good in training. And I’m happy to be where I am now.”
