“I want my players to look back and know that everything I did was intended to make them feel supported and seen.”

For Danielle Lao, that’s what coaching is all about. From USC All American to the WTA Tour to shaping SoCal’s next generation, her greatest impact may be what happens beyond the baseline.

🎾🔥 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗮 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗳 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝘄𝗮𝘆?

“I can trust myself under pressure.”
“I can recover after a tough loss.”
“I can keep showing up when progress feels slow.” 💪💛

Maybe you earned it through matches that tested you, setbacks that shook your confidence, or practice sessions when you wondered whether the work would ever pay off. 🧠🎾

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗮 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆.

🫁 You breathed instead of rushing.
🎯 You committed to your shot despite the doubt.
👊 You stayed engaged after losing the first set.
✨ You gave yourself another chance.

𝗡𝗼𝘄, 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳, “I 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀,” 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀.

Keep that evidence close. Before your next match, remember one difficult moment you handled—and the action that helped you through it. Bring that action onto court again. 🏆🔥

👇 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: “A𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜’𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵, 𝗜 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗜 𝗰𝗮𝗻 ______.” 💬💛

“You’ve got to stay true to what you believe,” Goffi says. “The ethos of college coaching is education through sport. We’re here to educate players. We’re here to give them the tools to be successful in the rest of their life.”
Read how Coach @joshgoffi is staying true to his values in creating a culture at USC instead of selling out to the new landscape of collegiate tennis. Tournament Tough to the core! 💪 🎾
Thanks for the feature @ustacoaching!

HOW TO TRUST YOUR GAME WHEN THE PRESSURE IS ON 🎾

Break point. Tight shoulders. A mind full of “what ifs.”

As a high-performance mental training coach, I encourage tennis players to practice **how they prepare for the next point** with the same intention they bring to their strokes.

A pre-point routine gives your attention a clear job when emotions run high.

Here’s how to build yours:

🎾 KEEP IT SIMPLE
Adjust your racket strings → breathe → picture your desired target. Make the sequence easy to repeat under pressure.

⚡ TRAIN IT AT MATCH PACE
Use it during practice points, tiebreaks, and pressure drills. Rehearse it when you’re frustrated, too—that’s when you need to learn to return to it.

🧠 FINISH WITH ONE WORD
“Calm.” “Sharp.” “Ready.” Choose a word that connects to a specific action or feeling you’ve practiced.

🔁 REPEAT AFTER EVERY POINT
A winner can leave you rushing. A mistake can leave you hesitating. Use the same routine to bring yourself back to a clear intention.

Here’s the coaching insight: don’t judge your routine only by whether you win the next point.

Ask yourself:
• Did I bring my attention back?
• Did I choose a clear target?
• Did I commit to my decision?

You can do all three and still lose a point. Those are the responses you want to keep building.

You don’t have to eliminate nerves before you compete. Practice taking purposeful action while they’re there.

💬 When pressure builds, do you rush, hesitate, or overthink?

📌 Save this for your next practice and share it with a player who needs it.

Do you believe in love at first sight?

Or should I walk by again?

A backhand that will never be forgotten 🎾

Federer’s backhand breakdown:

1. PARTIAL TURN:
Notice how he holds the racquet with his non-dominant hand and brings his left elbow back. His dominant arm forms an “L”: his right hand stays low, while the racquet head is level with his head.

2. FULL TURN:
Watch how his chin touches his right shoulder, helping him stay balanced. He steps forward with his front leg, landing heel first and then on the ball of his foot, while keeping the “L” shape.

3. JUST BEFORE CONTACT:
This is where many players lose the “L” shape. Keeping it, as you can see in the video, helps generate more power. It lets you drive through the ball and create topspin.
Also notice how the bottom of the racquet points toward the ball.

4. FOLLOW-THROUGH:
After contact, Roger brings the racquet forward and extends through the shot. He finishes with the racquet above his head and the bottom of the racquet facing the other side of the court. At the same time, he opens his non-dominant arm back for stability. Even in the finish, he keeps the “L” shape.

Is Roger Federer’s one-handed backhand the best of all time?
