Game play always comes first.🎮
When creating environment art, making it look pretty is only part of the job. How does the space guide players? Support gameplay? Stay visually clear while building the feelings?

In my talk at the University of Utah, I shared what working in the industry has taught me about how environment art serves gameplay, and what that means for the decisions we make as artists.

The full recording is now on YouTube! Hope it helps anyone preparing to take their environment art from personal projects into game production. ❤️

Last Thursday, I had such an amazing time with the students and faculty at the University of Utah! ❤️

I was so honored to be invited by the Utah Games program to give a talk about how environment art supports gameplay and helps shape the overall player experience.

Huge thanks to Miranda for hosting and recording the session, and to Leona and Scott Zhang from Max Education for helping make this happen! My friend Candy Yi also gave a wonderful talk and shared so many great insights ✨

Missed the event? No worries! I’ll be uploading the recap to YouTube soon, so stay tuned 👀🎮

I'm so lucky to get to make the cakes and cupcakes for the Games Department's launch party at the University of Utah every year. This year, the theme was Pokemon so we did this gravity defying 4-tiered cake along with two side cakes and a whole bunch of cupcakes topped with Pokeballs. The main cake took quite a bit of engineering, several trips to Home Depot, some airbrushing, and some edible images but what really topped it off were all of the Funko pops that were in the office of one of the professors. They just kept coming and we kept popping them on!

The second cake was an extra tall all black tier with Pokemon kanto gym badges all the way around it and then the third cake was a Pokemon stadium with a 3D pokemon ball on top. This order was a beast to deliver and set up but I loved how it turned out!

They chose Lemonberry Cake, Rainbow Bright Cake, Cookies & Cake, and Brownie Lovers for their flavors. That's a nice little spread!
