The Denbo Center for Humanities & the Arts (DCHA) at the University of Tennessee seeks submissions for its inaugural conference, “Speculative Souths,” which will take place June 10-12, 2027 in Knoxville, TN.

“Speculative Souths” is a symposium that will redirect past regionalist studies of the US South with a transformative focus on “speculative representation,” a way of creatively reimagining identity and place as sites of possibility—building from the past but attuned to the developments of the present and needs of the future. The US South has long been a space upon which others project fantasies of national and regional identity, heroic mythologies of resistance, or nostalgic ideas of “American” identity. Rarely has it been considered a space from which progressive and future-oriented narratives about place and identity emerge and develop. By contrast, the interdisciplinary symposium “Speculative Souths” will consider the US South as a generative space of imagination and possibility.

That last photo is proof of a day well spent! 🪏

We're excited to welcome families with children of all ages to one of our favorite annual events on Sunday, October 18. Join us for "Can You Dig It?" from noon-4 pm and explore archaeology with hands-on activities at the museum.

Walk-ins are welcome, but registration is always appreciated. Either way, it is FREE! Link in our bio or in the comments. A little boy sits smiling near a dinosaur skeleton display outdoors. Next to them, a sign reads, "Can you dig it? International Archaeology Day, What to expect at the museum on Sunday, Oct. 18," followed by "McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture." Trees and other plants are visible in the background.

DCHA Faculty Fellow Janelle VanderKelen (Cinema Studies and Time-Based Art) used a Riggsby Travel Fellowship to visit the Abbey of St. Hildegard in Germany to conduct research in connection with her film project, The Golden Thread. During her time in Germany, she was able to film
multiple interviews with the sisters of the Abbey who are some of the foremost scholars on St. Hildegard’s life.

Created through the generous support of Stuart and Katherine Riggsby, the Riggsby Travel Fellowship provides financial support to Denbo Center Faculty Fellows and Graduate Student Fellows to help defray travel costs to conferences, museums, and archival institutions for the purpose of furthering their research.
