Margot after ✂️🔑 “Don’t you even believe I was attacked?” I had the time of my life working on this show, and I’m so unbelievably grateful to have had this opportunity 💛 but I’m never going to be quiet when I know my voice could initiate change. It’s a fascinating thing to have be on stage when suddenly the audience becomes the jury. In a play that for the first 45 minutes was relatively upbeat and humorous, the tone is meant to shift drastically… and yet, hearing laughter while a woman is physically assaulted was jarring, to say the least. For years now, I’ve tried to live by the notion that the audience is always right (Every Brilliant Thing taught me that). But this felt different. This felt like the sinister, cold hand of casual misogyny that worms its way into our psyches, subtle but deadly. Being inside Margot, fighting for her life, and knowing that people found it funny… sucked. Am I condemning the audience entirely? No. I’ve done my best to separate intention from outcome in this situation. I just think this is one of the core purposes of theatre; to observe our responses to stories. What does how we react to things say about our subconscious? Is there an opportunity for learning here? If you’re reading this and you’re one of the people who laughed, I don’t blame you.
