What I love about PT is the ability it gives to those whose abilities have been taken away.

Neurological disorders are on a whole different ball game of management compared to your traditional orthopedic and sports.

Funny enough, this was the branch of PT that peaked my interest in my early years as a former PTA student.

What an opportunity it was to peak into the lives of people living with neurological disorders such as PD. Seeing the capability of each person living with PD and who they are above their diagnosis was such a joy and a catalyst of reflection.

In celebration of PT Day of Service, we’re highlighting UTMB physical therapy students giving back through two community clinics in Galveston!

At St. Vincent’s, a student-led pro bono clinic, first- through third-year students help provide care for uninsured community members. At Grace Clinic, students support people experiencing homelessness through physical therapy, foot baths, and tennis shoe distribution.

In light of PT month (October). I am beyond blessed to practice in a profession that utilizes movement to heal.

Exercise and promoting movement as a whole is a critical part of my identity as a person, and the reward of seeing patients move from a stage of fear of movement to embracing it and moving in confidence with an improved resilience will never grow old.

our ICU simulation served as a humble and eye-opening reminder that what we do as PTs goes beyond gym-based exercises.

learning when it’s appropriate to mobilize versus when to hold-off, allowing the patient to show us their best and not jumping in too quickly to aid.

assess, assess, and assess. every movement and effort a patient makes is something significant to note and consider for their potential and prognosis of recovery.

an appreciation of one of many lines we need to understand how to manage, their role, and the appropriate response we must take as PTs when and if they’re removed.

Last week, our Faculty Advisor, Dr. Steve Spivey was invited to be the keynote speaker for the commencement ceremony at UTMB in Galveston. He also received the Distinguished Alumnus Award.

Way to go, Dr. Spivey!! You're setting such a great example for us! 🐐🐐🐐

I’m sorry. I know I’m a little late but I just went to my brother Casey’s white coat ceremony at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, Texas from last month on the 31st. It is so amazing that my brother’s continuing to be a student physical therapy. Keep up the good work.

A little hands-on learning goes a long way. 👣

During our visit with the @utmb_dpt class, Practitioner Emily Tully gave students the opportunity to experience what it’s like to walk with a prosthesis and better understand the challenges their future patients may face.

Experiences like this give future PTs a perspective you just can’t get from a textbook. ❤️
