Meet Louis David and his newly acquired 1993 Harley-Davidson FXR. Before I met Louis I met his home and the Suzuki Drz 250 2001, Harley Dyna 1997, Harley Sportster 2001 and Harley Shovelhead 1985 he lost in the fire. Louis acquired this home a few years back, moving up from DTLA. Living in a motorcycle shop surrounded by parts as well as his embroidery equipment had its limits, so he came north and found this quiet cul-de-sac in Altadena. From here he could mount his approach onto the world, chopper headed down back into the city and beyond. Louis is no stranger to loss in his life, both his mother and brother have passed on, it’s just him and his father now. There is something about losing half the family that really knocks your energy into a funky pattern, off kilter for life, constantly grappling for that steady flow. Family trees are easier to climb when there are more limbs. I’d know, I share that same percentage. After the fire Louis went to Colombia for a while to work on a family home. He found a way of life that he didn’t know he needed. The people showed him their big hearts and a way of speaking to each other that resonated deeply in him. As he’s landed back here in Altadena he’s been wondering where to put that. You go away to a magical place only to come back to your reality and you fear if don’t start using what you learned you’ll forget it. Sometimes I’m on a lot talking to a guy and they are saying all the right things but can’t hear themselves so I find it my place to fix that. Louis, you told me what your name means, the carpenter. The first thing your home needs to rebuild is water, the basis for all life and you’ve done that. Cleaning up the trash the workers made next door is the first step in creating order out of the mess someone else made for you. You were given the gift to create, be it with your choppers, your photos, or your embroidery. You are what you’re looking for. You’re what a lot of people are looking for. Keep showing up to Altadena Cars & Coffee and you’ll see what I mean. Thank you for the time on your lot and sharing all you did with me. Welcome back home. I love you Altadena. I love your dream.
