At UVA Wise, we dream up possibilities, and then we work to recognize-and achieve-what’s possible.

Art à la Carte is back with a "delicious" sampling of three different visual art workshops in the studios of the Gilliam Center for the Arts at UVA Wise. The premise of these workshops is that given their length, participants can get a ‘taste’ of all three, or just a couple.

On Monday, Oct. 26th from 6 to 9 p.m., the art instructors will offer Ceramics Glazing with Jessica Necessary, Spooky Victorian Portraits: Making the Eyes Light Up with Ray Stratton, and Maker's Monday: Glow in the Dark 3D Prints with Jim Veenstra. The workshops are completely free and open to all! No experience is necessary. Space is limited to 10 participants per workshop. Learn more and RSVP at proartva.org/studio

"The weeklong residency at UVA Wise with Tibetan monks from the Drepung Loseling Monastery seemed to be a universally moving experience to everyone I spoke with or witnessed at the events we hosted. I saw so many students and community members that I don’t often see at other Pro-Art programs. People seemed intrigued by the unique nature of the monks work and its intersecting art and spirituality.

"While the music and symbols weren’t those familiar to us from the Judeo-Christian practices prominent in our local culture, deep respect and appreciation seemed to emanate from all who witnessed their 30 hours creating the most intricate mandala designs out of funneled sand, their two-toned throat singing (for which Tibetan monks are most famous), or the chanting, horns and percussive instruments that filled out their ceremonial practice.

"Quiet, intentioned, sentient, and focused human beings working collectively with modesty and persistence is not something we see very often in our fast-paced digitally dominated lives. I couldn’t watch the sand painting for too long at any given time without getting choked up by the rather profound collective intention embodied in their work. I don’t think their impact will be soon forgotten."

Pro-Art Executive Director Michael McNulty shares his thoughts on the impact of The Mystical Arts of Tibet residency this past week in Wise.

I’m excited to announce that I will be representing our beautiful region for Appalachian Heritage Week at @uva_wise Cantrell Banquet Hall, Friday, October 16th. One of the greatest pleasures of living in these mountains is the music inspired by the Appalachian people, I can’t wait to share my story and my music in pride of the place I call home. #appalachianartist #uvawise
