World Mental Health Day (Sat, October 10) is a global observance to raise awareness, confront systemic barriers, and promote inclusion, dignity, and community-based support worldwide. The UVM Office of Primary Care and AHEC is proud to host an interactive panel event -- Cultural Perspectives on Mental Health and Wellness – to highlight local Vermont programs that are informed by and responsive to the communities they serve. The event is October 19, 2026 from 5:30-7:00 at the Medical Education Sullivan 200 Classroom. Panelists will discuss the role of Community Health Workers in connecting health professionals to the communities they serve, and practical examples of how to seek information from marginalized communities about the supports would be most helpful to them. We will also learn about the term ‘cocooning’ as it relates to an enrichment program that aims to proactively promote wellbeing. The panel event is open to all health professions students and the Larner community – anyone who is interested in learning about community outreach and engagement directly from community leaders who are doing this important work. Please join us! Contact for event details and questions reach out to Patti Smith Urie at patti.smith-urie@med.uvm.edu Flyer for the AHEC Spotlight Series titled “Cultural Perspectives on Mental Health and Wellness.” The event takes place on Monday, October 19, 2026, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in MedEd 200 (Sullivan Classroom). The program features a panel discussion on mental health and the importance of including diverse voices in health care. Panelists will share examples from their work to strengthen inclusive community engagement and build supportive environments where everyone can thrive. The flyer includes headshots of the three panelists, AHEC Spotlight Series branding, University of Vermont and Larner College of Medicine logos, and contact information for Patti Smith Urie (patti.smith-urie@med.uvm.edu). The Office of Primary Care and AHEC Program, Vermont AHEC website (vtahec.org), and @uvmahec social media handle are listed at the bottom.

Exciting SPRING BREAK opportunity! Join students in Buenos Aires, Argentina to learn about supporting children with developmental disabilities. Leader of this program is Dr. Darin Woolpert (darin.woolpert@uvm.edu). Students will see local professionals in practice at clinics and educational settings and will engage with students and attend lectures from professors at the University of Buenos Aires. Other experiences include a guided city walking tour and trips to San Antonio de Areco and the islands of Tigre. The coursework focuses on similarities and differences between Argentina and the United States and reflecting on ways the experience can improve their ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds, etc. Estimated cost of program is $2603. Programs fees cover home stay in a private bedroom with local host family, breakfasts and dinners, and transportation to/from airport and program activities. This does not cover airfare, course registration, or in-country expenses. See application for an estimate of complete cost. To consider: The US State Department has Argentina at a Level 1 travel advisory (lowest level) but Buenos Aires is a large city, so crime is an issue. Petty theft is the most common problem. Ability to walk for extended periods of time is necessary to participate in day trips. Elevated risk activities include visiting medical facilities and boat rides.
