There is something special about watching students step into the competition kitchen.

This week, we had 3 SK Hot Food competitors and 5 SP Pastry competitors who were willing to do exactly that.

They practiced. They prepared. They showed up. And then they did one of the hardest things we ask young culinarians to do: they put their work on the table and invited someone else to judge it.

That takes courage.

Competition has never been just about the medal. The medal is a moment. The real value is everything that happens on the way there.

It’s the hours of practice. The mistakes you learn from. The plate you rethink. The feedback that pushes you. The confidence you build. The chefs you meet. The connections you make. And realizing that every time you step into that kitchen, you walk out better than you were before.

That is why we compete.

And we are incredibly proud to celebrate our medalists:

Silver Medal 🥈
Chloe Kobayashi
Penelope Lott

Bronze Medal 🥉
Liyah Bahe
Emily Vier
Jared Partridge

Congratulations to each of them, and to every student who had the courage to compete. A medal is something to be proud of, but so is simply being willing to step into the arena, put your food out there, accept the critique, and keep growing.

A huge thank you to Chef Randy Torres, CEC, CCE, AAC, and Chef Logan Christiansen, CEC, for giving their time, knowledge, and experience to our students. The thoughtful critiques, conversations, encouragement, and mentorship are what make opportunities like this so valuable.

To all of our competitors: keep showing up. Keep pushing. Keep learning. Keep putting your food out there.

This is how you grow.
This is how you build your craft.
This is how you become a chef.

And we’re just getting started.

Last week, @bobcatcompany came to visit UVU! Our students got behind the controls to test out equipment, compare new and older technology, and learn directly from industry professionals.

We’re grateful for industry partners like Bobcat who give our students opportunities to learn beyond the classroom and make connections in the industries they’re preparing to enter.

At lunch the other day, I struck up a conversation with a group of students studying 2D animation. One of the things I love most about UVU is getting to know our students and hearing their stories. As we talked, I learned that one of the students, Benati, is seriously skilled in parkour and recently ranked third in the world by the Sport Parkour League. Ben was also a student-athlete on our track and field team, competing in jumps and sprints. Moments like these remind me just how extraordinary UVU students are! #AtUVU #APlaceForYou
