Research on climate and environmental justice can look like a lot of different things, and so should the funding that supports it 🌱 EarthLab has spent the last few years asking how we can better support our @UofWa research community: to germinate an idea that isn't ready for a full grant yet, or to move quickly when a wildfire, a flood, or a policy window demands it. Today, we're thrilled to introduce two new EarthLab grant types and the twelve teams who make up their first cohorts. Incubator Grants support the early-stage partnerships and research agendas that longer-term work depends on. Rapid Response Grants move at the speed of urgency — funding data collection when the window is narrow. These twelve teams are doing that work across early childhood classrooms, coastal communities, carceral settings, wildfire-impacted neighborhoods, and more. Swipe through to meet the PI's behind the projects! We can't wait to share more about each of them in the weeks ahead. For now, you can read about their projects on our website with the link in our bio.

Honored to be in community today at Wing Luke Museum for a special screening of Making Waves: The Rise of Asian America in celebration of AA&NH/PI Heritage Month. Proud for MUV WA to stand alongside OCA Greater Seattle, Wing Luke Museum, and UW American Ethnic Studies in supporting this powerful gathering discussing representation, visibility, and Asian American activism. The filmmaker Jon Osaki and panel, including Devin Cabanilla representing MUV WA, Dr. Connie So (UW AES), and Doan Diane Hoàng Dy (Wing Luke), reminded us that every step forward in our history has been shaped by action, protest, and collective voice. From the 1968 student strikes to today’s movements, the throughline is clear: our communities persist. Seeing our youth step into this legacy with courage and purpose gives real hope for what’s ahead. We’ll continue to advocate, organize, and build - right here in Washington. #makeusvisible #community #education #advocacy #AANHPIHM

🔗 full article: https://nwasianweekly.com/2026/04/seattle-memorial-for-1886-chinese-expulsion-gains-key-donors/ ‘The idea [for Chinese American Legacy Artwork Project (CALAP)] was initiated more than 20 years ago by Doug Chin, a community historian and then-president of @ocagreaterseattle. Bettie Luke—sister of Wing Chong Luke, the museum’s namesake and the first Asian American to hold elected office in King County—was a pivotal early backer and lead capital donor. The museum serves as fiscal sponsor and project manager, OCA Greater Seattle as a founding community partner, and the Chinese American Citizen Alliance - Seattle (CACA) as an ongoing supporter… Connie So, PhD, a teaching professor of @uw_aes and vice president of internships at OCA Greater Seattle, delivered a historical presentation tracing Chinese immigration to America and the events of 1886… The expulsion grew from the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act—the first federal law to bar immigration based on race or nationality—and anti-Chinese rage among white labor unions, chiefly the Knights of Labor. On Feb. 7, 1886, a mob swept through Seattle’s Chinatown, rounding up hundreds of residents and forcing most aboard the steamship, Queen of the Pacific. “It’s taken more than two decades to get this acknowledgment about the Chinese American community,” So said, “to show why it is that people came to America in the first place, contributed dramatically to the employment, operations, and development in Seattle and this whole Puget Sound area.”’

April is “Celebrate Diversity Month”—but across the U.S., many universities are moving in the opposite direction. Since 2016, Ethnic Studies and DEI initiatives have been quietly eliminated, merged, or scaled back. What does that actually look like? • Ethnic studies centers being closed • DEI offices eliminated or defunded • Departments merged into larger units • Courses reduced or cut These changes are often framed as “restructuring,” “low enrollment,” or responses to new political restrictions. Consolidation can mean something deeper: a loss of autonomy, visibility, and institutional support, even when programs technically still exist under a new name. Swipe through for confirmed cases and context across the country.
