Meet #UWAllen Ph.D. student Poojita Garg, whose research in the University of Washington’s Ubiquitous Computing (UbiComp Lab) aims to make fetal health monitoring more accessible. In the latest installment of our “I Am CSE” video series, Garg describes her work on DopFone, a system that uses an off-the-shelf smartphone’s existing speaker and microphone to accurately estimate fetal heart rate. Heart rate is an important sign of fetal health, but it can be difficult to monitor outside a doctor’s office. To use DopFone, a user places the phone’s microphone, which emits a tone and listens for the subtle variations in its echo caused by fetal heart beats, against their abdomen. A separate machine learning model then estimates the heart rate. In the future, Garg aims to be able to display the fetal heart rate within the DopFone app for users to see and then send to their doctor. “It all comes down to the tangible impact of making lives better for me. So tools like DopFone in the hands of about 5 billion smartphone users worldwide could actually expand fetal health access to the areas which have hospitals far off or are inaccessible,” Garg said. When Malek Itani experienced Apple Airpods Pro for the first time, he had an epiphany. Amazed by the feeling of being in his own personal space, Itani, a Ph.D. student in the UW Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering working in the #UWAllen Mobile Intelligence Lab, thought “Wow, we can do something here.” Then he remembered that the model he was working with in the lab was big, incapable of processing in real time, and definitely not something you could put on a pair of earbuds. “But what if you can?” Allen School professor and lab director Shyam Gollakota responded. Itani accepted the challenge, working with Gollakota and his labmates on a succession of #AI hearables that enable the wearer to customize their soundscape by amplifying the sounds and voices of people they want to hear — and silencing those they don’t. After proving the concept on standard headphones; they’ve since moved on to developing systems for “superhuman” hearing on earbuds and hearing aids and even started a company, Hearvana AI, to commercialize their work. This week, Itani received a Paul Baran Young Scholar Award from the Marconi Society, which recognizes exceptional early-career researchers whose work is advancing the future of information and communications technology (ICT). He’s one of only three scholars selected for the honor from around the world — and also the third honoree from Gollakota’s lab. “I feel like I’ve hit a niche that’s going to be so transformational, and it’s going to be in billions of devices,” said Itani. “It’s going to change the way we hear the world.” Read our story about Itani and his work: https://www.cs.washington.edu/allen-school-blog/malek-itani-marconi-society-ai-hearing/ Learn more about the Marconi Society Young Scholars: https://marconisociety.org/young-scholars/ #UWserves #Artificialintelligence #AcousticAI #AcousticIntelligence #AIforGood #ComputerEngineering #ElectricalEngineering #EngineeringResearchMatters A photo of Malek Itani standing outside with autumn leaves in the background. Did you know that the phone in your hand is a potentially powerful health screening tool, one that could save time, money and possibly even a life? Testing for common biomarkers like cholesterol and blood sugar often requires a doctor’s visit or acquiring and learning to use at-home testing devices and/or mailing in samples — and then waiting for results. But imagine you could do the same screenings whenever and wherever it’s convenient for you, and at a fraction of the cost… That’s the vision of University of Washington researchers like #UWAllen postdoc and alum Jason Hoffman (Ph.D., ‘25) and Allen School and UW ECE professor Shwetak Patel. They lead the team that is developing ResoScreen, an accurate, easy-to-use readerless test strip for common health biomarkers that is compatible with any smartphone. 📱 Earlier this summer, the team presented ResoScreen at Nucleate’s Demo Day in June, where they received the Life Science Washington Market Impact Award in recognition of their innovative, patient-focused solution. They followed that up with a UW CoMotion Innovation Gap Fund award, which supports proof-of-concept and business development activities to advance promising innovations that could lead to new products and services — like at-home health screening! Learn more about ResoScreen on the company’s website: https://www.resoscreen.com Also check out their recent interactive demo at #CHI2026: https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3772363.3799167 Find the full list of spring Innovation Gap Fund awardees on the CoMotion website: https://comotion.uw.edu/funding-and-competitions/programs/comotion-innovation-gap-fund/awardees/ #UWserves #EngineeringResearchMatters #MobileHealth #HealthScreening #CSforGood An image of a smartphone with the ResoScreen glucose reader plugged in. On the screen of the smartphone is instructions for the user to prick their finger and place a drop of blood on the strip. The accompanying text reads. "What if you could do your own health screening using your phone?"

It’s Seattle Restaurant Week! 🍝 To mark this celebration of the local food scene, we’re offering up a taste of how University of Washington researchers are working to make dining out accessible to everyone. Designing a robot that can autonomously pick up items of food from a plate and deliver it to a person’s mouth — without getting stabby or spilling it in their lap — means overcoming significant challenges in dexterous manipulation and human-robot interaction. Members of the #UWAllen Personal Robotics Lab have chewed over the problem and are developing a robot-assisted feeding system with the help of users with motor impairments. One day, you might spot one of our assistive robots at a table near you! 🍽 Check out the YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QLWAM63kqw Version with audio descriptions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSqVBN42ZG0 #SeattleRestaurantWeek #UWinnovates #robotics #HRI #accessibility #accessibilitymatters #a11y #research

Smart earbuds may be the less intrusive, more privacy-preserving alternative to smart glasses. A team of researchers in #UWAllen’s Mobile Intelligence Lab led by professor Shyam Gollakota introduced VueBuds, the first system that incorporates small cameras into off-the-shelf wireless earbuds to allow users to chat with an #AI model about the scene in front of them. Similar to Meta glasses, VueBuds can translate signs in foreign languages, act as an aid for low-vision wearers, or identify plant species during a hike. For example, a user might look at a Korean food package and ask, “Hey Vue, translate this for me.” Through the earbuds, they would then hear an AI voice reply, “The visible text translates to ‘Cold Noodles’ in English.” The VueBuds system takes low-resolution, black-and-white still images, which it transmits over Bluetooth for processing locally on a smartphone or other device. It takes only about a second for an AI model on the device to answer questions about the image, which users can then delete. In a study, the researchers found that VueBuds achieved up to 84% accuracy when translating or identifying objects and 93% when identifying the author and title of a book. The team presented their research this week at #CHI2026 in Barcelona, Spain, where their paper received an honorable mention. Read more about VueBuds in UW News: https://www.washington.edu/news/2026/04/14/cameras-in-wireless-earbuds-vuebuds/ As well as in IEEE Spectrum: https://spectrum.ieee.org/smart-earbuds-smart-glasses-privacy #computerscience #artificialintelligence #mobileintelligence #ubiquitouscomputing #wirelessearbuds In front of a window with a view of the skyscrapers, a man wearing the VueBuds earbuds in his ears looks at a bottle of Korean sauce.
