The West Coast’s first public, open-access lab for pilot-scale battery manufacturing is open for business! With the new suite of state-of-the-art capabilities at the Washington Clean Energy Testbeds, innovators, researchers, and students can make batches of pouch cells — each about the size of a Pop-Tart — to demonstrate new chemistries and materials at commercially relevant scales. This is an essential step to attract funding for next-generation batteries that charge faster, hold more energy, and use abundant and earth-friendly materials. 🔋🌎

Students at @bigbendcommunitycollege and @uwcheme can train hands-on for jobs in Washington's booming battery sector. 🐾

Swipe to see how a pouch cell is made and visit wcet.washington.edu to learn more!

I would be knee deep in chemical engineering had someone not given me a chance all those years ago.

The very first person who gave me a chance to tutor was through Care.com in 2015. A couple years later, in 2017, I was back in California for a month between quarters of studying chemical engineering. I applied to a new tutoring center (on Care.com) that had just opened, and the owner took a chance on me.

I had only about a month of tutoring experience. What I did have was a love of math and science, and a chemical engineering degree in progress.

That one opportunity changed the direction of my life.

It was my first time working in a tutoring center, and I got to work with kindergartners learning to read to 10th graders struggling with algebra. I realized how much I loved helping students understand the concept and see where the gap was in their learning. Education itself is not the issue but the pressure of grades is.

I kept tutoring throughout college, started tutoring professionally, and even continued during COVID while working a full-time corporate job. Looking back, I don’t think I would be building Kindred Tutors today if that owner hadn’t taken a chance on me.

Sometimes you don’t need someone to tell you that you’re ready. You just need someone willing to give you a chance. Thank you for giving me mine. ❤️

What does it mean to “think like an engineer”?

For me, it started long before college — on the living room floor, building with Legos.

When I went on to study Chemical Engineering, I realized something: engineering isn’t just about formulas and calculations. It’s about creativity, problem-solving, and figuring out how different pieces work together to solve complex problems.

That combination of structure + creativity is at the heart of how I approach education at Kindred Tutors.

Because to succeed on a challenging exam like the SHSAT, students don’t just need to memorize formulas. They need to learn how to think — how to break down unfamiliar problems, recognize patterns, reason logically, and stay confident when the answer isn’t immediately obvious.

That’s the mindset behind our SHSAT STEM Prep Program. 🎯

And before students start preparing, they should know what they actually need to work on.

📚 FREE SHSAT Diagnostic + Personalized Skill Report — August 23

Students will get a diagnostic assessment plus a personalized report highlighting their key areas for improvement.

No guessing. No wasting time on skills they already know. Just a clearer starting point.
