Ran into a group of future state leaders and took questions about affordable housing and the early learning center at Mount Baker. It's a reminder of how transformational this will be for so many families with children.

Proud that our state is a partner on this project and making record investments in affordable housing — nearly $1 billion in this 2-year budget. Kids in orange jackets raising hands as Bob kneels down

After getting rejected during my first PhD cycle, I was convinced there wasn’t room for me at the table. But, thankfully my friend @therenaissanceacademic wouldn’t hear that and encouraged me to try again in a different program that seemed a better fit for my goals. And what do you know….it worked out better than I could have imagined! #academia #arthistorian #phdstudent #historian #uw @uweducation @uofwa

Yesterday, we celebrated a major milestone in building the Beloved Community with the groundbreaking of the Mount Baker Redevelopment Project.

Together with our partners, El Centro de la Raza is helping create 434 affordable homes, a new early learning campus, and welcoming community spaces in the heart of South Seattle, next to the Mount Baker Light Rail Station.

This project represents years of collaboration and a shared commitment to housing stability, educational opportunity, and a future where families can thrive. Rooted in the voices and rich cultural heritage of the Mount Baker neighborhood, this development reflects what is possible when we work together to build a more just and equitable community.

Thank you to Gov. Bob Ferguson, Mayor Katie Wilson, UW College of Education Dean Mia Tuan, and Mercy Housing Northwest Acting President Colin Morgan-Cross for joining El Centro de la Raza Executive Director Estela Ortega, Rainier Valley preschoolers, and community partners to mark this important occasion.

We are building more than housing. We are investing in families, strengthening community, and creating opportunities for generations to come.

Learn more about the Mount Baker Redevelopment Project at the link in our bio.

Breaking ground today on a transformational project at Mount Baker — more than 400 units of housing and a new early learning center, right next to the light rail station.

We need more housing in Washington state, and we're excited to be a partner in making it happen.

Attending the gathering for Centering Communities of Color in Statewide School Transformation: Establishing Just Policies and Practices, edited by Dra. Varghese, Plecki, Elfers and Rajendran was heartwarming. My journey at the @uweducation was shaped by extraordinary thinkers and mentors, including Drs. Banks, Gay, Parker, Gehrke and others. They taught us to connect lived experiences with research, center the voices of communities most affected by our decisions, and translate what we learn into more just policies and practices. Back then, I thought I was learning all of this for education. Nearly 20 years later, as I run for Seattle City Council, I am realizing how much those lessons seeded this run for public office. They taught me to listen before proposing solutions. To ask who is missing from the table. To look beyond assumptions and examine the evidence. To understand that good intentions are not enough if policies do not work for the people they are intended to serve. I used to think my lived experiences and my academic work occupied different parts of my life. I understand now that these great thinkers gave me the knowledge and tools to make sense of those experiences, and a framework for turning them into action. What a joy to be back with friends from those graduate school years. We were once students and young mothers together with big questions about equity and justice. Perhaps the seeds for this City Council run were planted in those classrooms almost 20 years ago. Back to #seattlsd5 this morning to spend some time reading before meeting with neighbors with a renewed reminder of why I am doing this work in the first place. #julieforseattle #julieforseattled5 #civiceducation #equity

Next time we meet, expect me to say “Dubs up” instead of “What’s up?” I’ve been trying it on Kunwar, and he laughs every time!

Anyway, major life update: I’m starting my Master’s in Education, Learning Sciences & Human Development at the UW. I’m already madly in love with the campus 💜
