Happy Friday in the Field Huskies! This week we are featuring Isabella, one of our amazing @uwpoe students! Read on to learn more about her experience studying abroad!
“I recently went on a study abroad trip to Copenhagen, Denmark with the Foster School of Business and the College of the Environment. The study abroad was based on learning about the progressiveness of the country and how they integrate sustainability on a day-to-day basis. We visited large- and small-scale environmental projects across Denmark, notably including business like Orsted and Maersk which push the production of offshore wind farms and renewable energy power for big travel shipping. Some of the smaller scales included urban farms and turning garbage into renewable sources. This opportunity guided me in my passion for the environment and gave me hope for the future.” -Isabella

Pearson and Schmidt study how strain builds up along the Cascadia Subduction Zone, a major offshore fault that poses significant earthquake and tsunami risks. Using probabilistic methods and surface motion data from land and seafloor GNSS stations, Pearson and Schmidt estimate where the fault is locked (stuck and accumulating strain) and where it is creeping slowly. Pearson and Schmidt also account for other factors affecting surface motion, such as land rebounding from glaciation and the slow relaxation of stress in the upper mantle. Their results suggest that the offshore portion of the fault is mostly locked, meaning it is storing energy for a future earthquake. This locked area varies along the coast and becomes more uncertain near the offshore edge of the fault. Pearson and Schmidt find that the impact of glacial rebound and deep relaxation of stress on their measurements is relatively small, so most of the surface movement can be attributed to the buildup of elastic strain. These findings improve our understanding of where strain is accumulating, which can inform future hazards.
