This weekend, @r.d.madison presents Good Earth Ground, on Saturday, October 10th from 6-10pm and Sunday, October 11th from 11-3pm, featuring the work of Chicago-based sculptor @kacielees and Cambodian-American artist and @uwglass MFA Candidate @uglyneon!

In Good Earth Ground, works by Lees and Thach form a shared conversation with electricity and time. Inspired by electrical grounding and gravity, the show proves that a single small entity can have a massive influence.

Located in a five-car garage, the R&D artist-run gallery is a vibrant hub that's dedicated to nurturing creativity and fostering artistic expression, providing a unique platform to emerging and established artists nationwide and serving as a haven for their ideas to come to life. R&D is committed to embracing diverse artistic visions, creating a dynamic space for innovation and collaboration. Exhibition support is provided by @theopen.fund, through the Poor Farm, with funding from @warholfoundation and @ruthfoundationforthearts.

SUNY Distinguished Professor of Art and Director of the @coalesce_biological_art at @ubuffaloart Paul Vanouse has sought to force the arcane codes of scientific communication into a broader cultural language. Interdisciplinarity and impassioned amateurism guide his art practice. For nearly 30 years he has employed molecular biology techniques in his artwork to challenge notions of individual, racial, and national identity. His current project, “Utter”, is a highly process-based endeavor that explores the phenomena of breathing. The multi-sensory artwork is an intricate glass apparatus containing microbes and visceral fluids that produces moist, odiferous emissions, simulating human breath, without humans.

His 2024 book, Difference, Sameness and DNA: Investigations in Critical Art and Science, chronicles over two decades of his artwork and scholarship.

His work has been exhibited in over 30 countries and widely across the US. Venues have included: @walkerartcenter, @albrightknox360, Carnegie Museum, @thewarholmuseum, @henryartgallery, @newmuseum, @museodebellasartes_, @museelouvre, @hkw_berlin, @muffatwerk, @zkmkarlsruhe, and @te_papa.

His work has been supported by the @creative_capital Foundation, @rockefellerfdn, @simonsfoundation, @the_fulbright_program, @neaarts, @nyfacurrent, @nyscouncilonthearts, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, @mellonfoundation, and @nsfgov.

Best known for small-format canvases that resist classification, fixed formulae, or repetition, painter @petershear uncouples abstract painting from the inheritance of established idioms, offering an alternative to dogma & orthodoxy. Shear’s talk is facilitated by curator for the Chazen Museum, Dr @erica.di.be.ne.de.tto, a distinguished curator & art historian specializing in art from the mid-20th century to the present day.

Chilean-born, trans & intersex visual artist & educator @catalina_schliebener’s research & collage-based practice extends across work on paper, sculpture, installations, & mixed-media murals. They explore & interrogate learned stereotypes around gender, sexuality, class, & nationalism through popular constructions of childhood & adolescence.

Pamela Alper Associate Curator at the @mcachicago Dr @jadine.collingwood has curated contemporary art & performance projects including Chicago Works: Caroline Kent in 2021, Martine Syms: She Mad Season One in 2022, Gary Simmons: Public Enemy with René Morales in 2023, Nicole Eisenman: What Happened, organized by Monika Bayer-Wermuth & Mark Godfrey, in 2024, & Slow Dance in 2026.

A scholar of contemporary studio craft, material culture, decorative arts, and design, Perry Price is the Executive Director of the international @haystack_school on Deer Isle, Maine. Founded in 1950 as a research and studio program in the arts, Haystack offers visiting artists and scholars from a variety of fields including science, literature, music, and the visual arts a two-week, Open Studio Residency program, exhibitions, tours, auctions, artist presentations. Haystack also functions as a ʻthink-tankʼ in looking at craft—publishing annual monographs, organizing a variety of conferences and symposia that examine craft in broader contexts, and connecting people through craft.

Prior to joining Haystack, Price served as executive director of the @crafthouston, as director of education for the @craftcouncil, as curator of exhibitions and collections for @fullercraft, and was a member of the board of @cerfplus. Price received a BA in the History of Art from the @johnshopkinsu and an MA in Museum Studies from the @coopgradprogram in Museum Studies, @sunyoneonta, and the New York State Historical Association.

New York-based artist @jimgaylord explores the possibilities & boundaries of abstraction, adapting languages of formalism, geometry, ornament, & iconography through painting, drawing, collage, & sculpture. Recontextualizing symbols from our visual culture, his work resonates in ways that are specific yet enigmatic, seeking a sense of harmony & rightness among shapes that appear otherwise idiosyncratic.

Through sculpture, installation, video, drawing, & public intervention, @peihsuan_wang’s practice traces kinship shaped by migration, memory, & the interplay between personal & canonized histories. Weaving bio(mytho)graphical narratives, folklore, & cultural artifacts born of Asia-Pacific geopolitics, her work reflects on how meaning is carried & reconstructed across generations.

Furniture maker, artist, & educator @wendymaruyama has spent more than 5 decades creating innovative, boundary-pushing work. Rooted in traditional craft, her ongoing wildLIFE Project confronts the endangerment of elephants following a research trip to Kenya—a powerful work that merges craftsmanship with activism & storytelling.

Finally tried my hand at neon this summer, and fell in love with the medium. Made a ton of bends and loops to weave around one of my ceramic face vessels to turn into a Medusa-inspired piece.

Huge thanks to @zickuhr_thomas for being such an incredible teacher, and for helping us speed-run an entire neon course in just four weeks. I’ve learned so much and can’t wait to keep exploring where this medium takes me. #uwmadison #uwart #neon #uwglass

I was fairly busy this semester. World tour (pennsylvania, phoenix, denver, las vegas) then graduated then made some paintings and some glass sculptures then saw some birds and yup, thats about it.
