Attention industry partners, alumni and friends: Join us this Thursday, October 29, on the UW campus for the Allen School’s annual Research Showcase & Open House!

Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with #UWAllen students and faculty who are advancing the latest developments in artificial intelligence, accessibility, systems, computer vision, security, robotics and more. During the day, we will feature a series of technical talks, including sessions exploring #AI and its applications to health and the environment; a faculty panel discussing computer science education in the age of AI; and a luncheon keynote by Allen School professor Stephanie Wang on “Systems for Future Intelligence.”

In the evening, student researchers take over the Allen Center to share their latest projects during our poster session and open house. Vote for your favorite poster or demo in our People’s Choice Award, and join us in celebrating the winners of the coveted Madrona Prize sponsored by our friends at Madrona Venture Group.

RSVP is required. Learn more and RSVP on our website: https://www.cs.washington.edu/community-engagement/industry-affiliates/research-showcase/

Meet #UWAllen Ph.D. student Poojita Garg, whose research in the University of Washington’s Ubiquitous Computing (UbiComp Lab) aims to make fetal health monitoring more accessible.

In the latest installment of our “I Am CSE” video series, Garg describes her work on DopFone, a system that uses an off-the-shelf smartphone’s existing speaker and microphone to accurately estimate fetal heart rate. Heart rate is an important sign of fetal health, but it can be difficult to monitor outside a doctor’s office.

To use DopFone, a user places the phone’s microphone, which emits a tone and listens for the subtle variations in its echo caused by fetal heart beats, against their abdomen. A separate machine learning model then estimates the heart rate. In the future, Garg aims to be able to display the fetal heart rate within the DopFone app for users to see and then send to their doctor.

“It all comes down to the tangible impact of making lives better for me. So tools like DopFone in the hands of about 5 billion smartphone users worldwide could actually expand fetal health access to the areas which have hospitals far off or are inaccessible,” Garg said.

What does graduate research sound like?🎶

To celebrate the UW Graduate School’s partnership with the @kexp BBQ, we invited graduate students to connect their research with music. We wanted to know what songs capture the questions they’re asking, the ideas that inspire them, or the work they’re doing?

Their answers are as diverse as their fields—from landslides and prosthetic design to digital archives and healthy aging. Explore their research, listen to their selections, and discover the many ways graduate scholarship at the UW finds its rhythm.

Web archives like the one that preserves federal websites from past presidential administrations (known, fittingly, as the End of Term Web Archive), contain millions of PDFs preserving important information about our nation’s history and governance.

It turns out that preservation is the easy part; being able to search and retrieve data contained in the archive is not. But that’s changing thanks to a team of UW researchers that includes #UWAllen alumni Benjamin Lee (Ph.D., ‘23) and Kyle Deeds (Ph.D., ‘25). They recently introduced a new open-source #AI tool, GovScape, that enables historians, journalists and other interested members of the public to discover relevant documents within these vast archives using new multimodal search capabilities. These include semantic search, which allows you to search for a topic like “endangered species protection” without knowing the exact terms the relevant documents might include, and visual search, which can be used to find charts and images or exhibiting qualities such as redaction.

“I’m really excited about the prospects for better access to government information with projects like GovScape,” said Lee, who is now a faculty member in the University of Washington Information School. “Being able to actually find relevant information is vital to the health of democracy and to the functioning of society.”

In addition to Lee and Deeds, Allen School undergraduate researchers Claire Gong, Shreya Shaji, Alison Yan, Albert Du, and Anjali Gopal contributed to the project, which the team presented at the Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics in San Diego earlier this month.
