Exactly two weeks away from official pub date of *Frost Will Come*...I had the rare pleasure of entering the alternate universe of Mary Ann Killilea's vast dahlia gardens. Teaching me lessons in all that really matters, and feeling my mom, Rosemary, right alongside me.

This is a last reminder to register for Joy Ladin’s three-part “Writing the Shekhinah” workshop, which will begin this Wednesday, October 14, from 1-2 p.m. EST. Register today and explore the Shekhinah not as a fixed idea of divine presence but as a creative writing genre. Joy invites us to imagine divine presence in our own lives and world, even—or perhaps especially—when divinity is hard to find.

Head to the link in our bio!

Can’t wait for next week’s events: “From the Archives to the Dance Floor” and the Fall Barn Dance? Check out the Memorial Library first floor lobby! In collaboration with Mills Music Library and UW Press, Go Big Read put on an exhibition on folklore and folk music at UW-Madison. Image of an exhibition display case with books, CDs, and sheet music inside. Next to the display case are two signs on folklore

“…a book simultaneously and almost dizzyingly alert to the intricate links between life and death.”

First pre-pub interview! Here, I’m the lucky beneficiary of Philip Graham’s keen ear, kind heart and generosity. Thank you, Philip, for engaging with me and with *Frost Will Come* for *3 Quarks Daily*.

“When it comes down to it, I like to think of *Frost Will Come* as a book that puts us in touch with care in a period in world history where harm more often seems the order of the day.”

Desire Lines is one of @altajournal’s 15 New Books for October. “How do you become a mother in ways that you have never been mothered?”

Alta is a quarterly about California and the West. Its list, by Elizabeth Casillas and Katie Hulse, gathers “the works by authors on and of the West” that Alta is “most excited to see published this month,” and it calls mine “a bold debut memoir.”

Though I went to high school in Northern California, I am now of the West by way of Seattle. The book travels the other direction, tracing my matrilineage from Cuba to Spain.

Alta’s list runs in order of pub date. Mine is this Tuesday, October 6th, from @redhenpress in print and Brilliance Audio as an audiobook that I narrated.

Fourteen more October books:

Cormac McCarthy: A Legacy Revisited, by Tracy Daugherty (St. Martin’s Press @stmartinspress)
The Occidental Book of the Dead, by T. Geronimo Johnson (William Morrow @williammorrowbooks)
California Inside Out: Mapping an Ecology of Mind, by Obi Kaufmann @coyotethunder (Heyday Books @heydaybooks)
A Wall Is Also a Road, by Annalee Newitz @ghidorahnotweak (Tor Books @torbooks)
Off the Reservation, by Stephen Graham Jones (S&S/Saga Press @sagapressbooks)
Passengers, by Alexander Maksik (Europa Editions @europaeditions)
The Boundless Biddy Mason: An Odyssey from Slavery to Freedom Across the American West, by Kevin Waite (University of California Press @uc_press)
Needlemouth, by K-Ming Chang (Simon & Schuster @simonbooks @kmingchang)
Hanging and Burning, by Walter Mosley (Little, Brown and Company @littlebrown)
Sutra Americana, by Monona Wali (University of Wisconsin Press @uwiscpress)
Worlds Unfolding: Science on the Page, by Jennifer A. Watts, Daniel Lewis, Joel A. Klein, and Natalie Lawler (Princeton University Press @princetonupress)
They Told Me Back Home Would Be Beautiful: A Palestinian Memoir, by Elena Dudum @elena_dudum (Atria/One Signal Publishers @atriabooks)
Mightier Than the Sword, by Jim Ruland @jimvermin (Rare Bird Books @rarebirdlit)
Frank Capra, by Sam Wasson (Harper)
.
I am grateful to @cassmannes of @pinestatepublicity for this connection.

Don't be distracted by Halloween! My pub date book launch event @riffraffpvd is just a few weeks away. Here's the full slate for Oct/Nov. I hope you'll find me wherever you live.

Pre-orders are now shipping!

More advance praise from the great Maria Tumarkin and the great Carole Maso:

“Reading Mary Cappello, I feel the physical location of my heart move. It doesn’t sit back in my chest anymore but has edged forward, closer to the world. This rearrangement only happens on those rarest of occasions when the reader says to the author, ‘The way you write, think, look, live. . . . I trust you with my life.'” – Maria Tumarkin, author of *Axiomatic*

“A beautiful and devastating work, darkly illuminating, filled with wisdom and sorrow and wonder. Palpable grief and love infuse every page. Cappello is our perfect guide as she traverses with fortitude and grace this most sacred terrain. A devotion like no other. Exceptional.” – Carole Maso author of *Mother and Child: A Novel*

UNLV PhD Alumni News!! Wendy Wimmer’s new novel, "The Doomscroller's Companion," coming in Fall 2026 from University of Wisconsin Press.

You’ve Got Mail, The Last of Us, and Fleabag collide:
Jane, aka @janeere, a thirtysomething professional web influencer with 1.7 million followers and zero bank balance, lives in her spinster aunt’s spare bedroom in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Her only confidant is Brian, a potter who is thrilled that the internet allows him to connect without having to leave his Appleton home and studio. Life is about to get worse for them both.

a month out from pub date seemed like a good time to share the title poem for "Frost Will Come." There's still time to pre-order, my Friends. Meanwhile, let us save the fluted dahlias from frost.

The author of books we love like Paris by the Book and When in Rome brings us something different tomorrow Sunday September 27 at 4 pm

It's a biography of an almost forgotten aviation pioneer, daring pilot and WWII General who lived to his nineties and entered into the Episcopal priesthood. He ended his ministry in Cave Creek. Arizona
