UW–Madison's historic Music Hall is getting a new name and a new purpose. Thanks to a landmark $30 million gift from Herb Kohl Philanthropies, the 146-year-old building will be renamed Herb Kohl Hall and transformed into the future home of the La Follette School of Public Affairs.

For more than 40 years, the La Follette School has been one of the nation's leading graduate programs in public affairs, shaping the next generation of policymakers and public servants. With a rapidly expanding student body, a newly launched undergraduate major, and a faculty that has doubled in size since 2019, La Follette is at an exciting inflection point in its growth. A dedicated, state-of-the-art home in Herb Kohl Hall will bring its community of students, faculty, and staff together under one roof for the first time.

We are proud to be leading the renovation design alongside our partner firm, Insite Consulting Architects. Our work will modernize the interior to create thoughtfully designed spaces for learning, collaboration, and civic discourse, while preserving the building's iconic exterior and historic character that has defined the UW–Madison campus for generations.

@uwlafollette plans to move into one of @uwmadison’s oldest buildings and rename the facility after former U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl.

Built in 1880 at the bottom of Bascom Hill, a Madison architect designed Music Hall as a place where all of the university’s 481 students could gather. Today, enrollment exceeds 51,000.

The Board of Regents, which oversees UW-Madison and Wisconsin's 12 other state universities, approved plans this month to renovate Music Hall. The building’s stone exterior is deteriorating, the mechanical systems are past life expectancy and the building lacks sprinklers.

Construction is expected to begin early next year. The $57 million project is supported through gifts and grants, using no state dollars. Designs are still being finalized, said Lori Wilson, a spokesperson for the university’s Division of Facilities Planning & Management.

On Monday, the La Follette School of Public Affairs announced Herb Kohl Philanthropies will provide a $30 million gift to the project, including $20 million for renovations and $10 million to support ongoing programming. Music Hall will be renamed Herb Kohl Hall.

“Sen. Kohl made a truly profound impact on the state of Wisconsin, UW-Madison and the La Follette School,” Susan Yackee, the school’s director, said in a statement. “I can’t think of a better way to honor him than by naming one of the most beautiful, historic and recognizable buildings on campus after him.”

Set to open in 2029, the updated building will serve as La Follette’s new home, bringing students, faculty and staff together. The school is currently based on Observatory Drive and scattered across 28 places on campus. In the new space, students will be able to access advisers, study spaces and a classroom.
