This week, we're closing this year's "Future Leaders in Football" (FLF) camp in Mexico City – the seventh edition of the programme, taking place alongside the FIFA World Cup 2026 🌎⚽.
GIZ is partnering with the German Football Association @dfb and Volkswagen @volkswagen.wedrivefootball to empower young women through football.
Our 18 participants from football federations, confederations and sport NGOs across Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean spent the week switching between conference room and pitch – combining leadership training with hands-on Sport for Development (S4D) sessions. Because sport, especially football, is a powerful instrument to foster education, social cohesion and economic participation – contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly gender equality and empowerment, and to building inclusive, equitable and resilient societies through leaders who use sport as a lever for sustainable development 💪. One special moment: freestyle football artist Karla Peña @karla_freestyler joined the practical S4D session, sharing her own journey from playing on the streets of Gustavo A. Madero to being honoured at Palacio Nacional ahead of the World Cup.
Guest speakers like Heidi Pellerano @heidipellerano (CONCACAF), Mariana Gutiérrez @m_guti_b (Liga MX Femenil), Jill Ellis @jillellis_ (FIFA), Laura McAllister @lauramcallister30 (UEFA), Kathrin Zeiske @misskathlucha , Andrea Rodebaugh @andrearodebaugh (FMF) and Cecilia Vales @chegrinch (founder of @shewinsmx , empowering girls and women from marginalised communities through sport and education) added further inspiration – encouraging participants to lead with confidence and authenticity. DFB Secretary General Holger Blask was also there throughout the week, joining the camp in person.

Yesterday the 7th edition of the "Future Leaders in Football Camp" kicked off in Mexico! ⚽🎉🫶

18 young women from Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and Germany are gathering right as the FIFA World Cup 2026 kicks off – for a 5-day programme focusing on female leadership in football.

💬 The programme opened with imputs from:
• Country director of GIZ Mexico, Ute Böttcher
• General secretary of DFB, Holger Blask
• Spokesperson Volkswagen Football Center, Dominik Wrasmann
• Chief commercial officer CONCACAF, Heidi Pellerano
• President of the first women’s football league in Mexico (Liga BBVA mx feminil), Mariana Gutiérrez

After an inspiring opening day, the participants will now dive into theoretical and practical sessions on leadership, communication, conflict resolution, gender equality, the S4D approach and more 😍

Congratulations Jodei Clarke! Bahamas Beach Soccer WNT player and United FC Senior Women’s Captain was recently named to Beach Soccer Stars 2025: Women’s Best Player Shortlist. This recognization places her among the best women’s beach soccer players in the world for 2025.

Women’s captains and coaches all over the world will vote for Jodei and the other names on the list to decide who will win the Beach Soccer Stars 2025 award for Women’s Best Player.

We are BLACK WOMEN!! We build, we don’t tear down other WOMEN...Some of us may have felt the pain of being torn down, even if you haven’t, you’ve seen it.. We have seen us BLACK WOMEN being held at a disadvantage because of the color of our skin. (Which is only the amount of melanin we have as humans)..We will now begin to build each other up and show that we deserve the same amount of respect than any other race may deserve.
