@genekogan wanted a place for community-based learning, and something more than the transactional, start-from-scratch nature of one-off workshops.

In this episode, he and Vanessa Rosa @va2rosa get into the wins, the wreckage, and what off-grid living has taught them about art and technology.

Experimental Brasil Interview
Vanessa Rosa

"I have always loved animation, but for a long time I thought it was not a career I could have. Painting was more accessible. I learned filmmaking from free online tutorials, by living among filmmakers, by paying attention. Soon I believe my AI agents will be able to make their own films, as many as they want."

I lead a writing workshop this year at @mars.college, and @ulrichamandac mentioned it for her Mars story for the @guardian. Neat!

A varied mix of contemporary digital artists are invited to a two week long residency at Château du Feÿ near Paris, France. They exchange ideas, try new technology, plan and make new Digital Art.
Eighties OG Digital Artist, Adrian Wilson was invited to take one of his rare working Quantel Paintboxes, which sold for over $150,000 back in 1981, to kickstart the Artmeta and Tezos sponsored Paintboxed World Tour.

This was the first time any of these artists had even seen a Paintbox (some weren't even born when it was launched in 1981) and they quickly picked up the famously user-friendly digital art machine which required no computer knowledge and was all controlled just using Quantel's world first pressure sensitive digital paint stylus.
Ivona Tau is first, showing the Paintbox to ChatGPT and asking it to direct her what to draw. Then we see a varied gallery of work produced by different artists after eagerly picking up the OG stylus.

After a few days, Wilson set a challenge to create a continuous animated video whereby each artist would build on the art of the previous artist, starting with a photo of the Château. To allow viewers to see how the Paintbox's UI worked, Wilson has left the menu and colour mixing palettes showing in the video, producing a speeded-up seamless video, created by around a dozen very different renowned digital artists.

Verdelis & Mycos
Dir. Vanessa Rosa

"What if future beings could change our present? -

In a distant future, Little Martians are descendants from all of Earth's lifeforms. When Verdelis, a plant humanoid who believes in patient cultivation, clashes with Mycos, a fungal mind embracing chaos-as-evolution, their philosophical debate about life's inevitable suffering escalates into a radical proposition: What if they could reshape time itself to create gentler paths through history?"

✨ART MAKER ARTIST FEATURE✨

ARTIST: Vanessa Rosa, Brazil 🇧🇷
👉 Featured in ART MAKER Issue 1

Brazilian artist and pioneer in AI / human artistic collaboration tells us about her work:

“My work addresses contemporary questions about AI’s role in creativity, proposing collaboration rather than replacement. Each Little Martian begins as hand-thrown clay, then transforms through 3D scanning and AI-powered animation into digital storytellers. This hybrid process demonstrates how traditional crafts can evolve alongside technology while maintaining their essential humanity. The animation onvites contemplation of our cosmic place, emphasizing hope and continuity beyond planetary boundaries. By visualizing AI and digital simulations as tools for preserving and expanding collective memory, I suggest a future where consciousness transcends physical limitations, carrying Earth’s essence throughout the galaxy. The Little Martians serve as both guardians of human heritage and pioneers of post-human possibility.

“The Little Martians project has garnered significant international acclaim, establishing itself as a pioneering work in the emerging field of AI-assisted traditional arts: Featured in Nvidia AI Art Gallery for two consecutive years (2022-2024); over 10 awards across international film festivals 40+ festival participations worldwide; Featured in Christie’s auction - alongside established contemporary artists Museum exhibitions across multiple continents Academic recognition in digital art and new media studies. This recognition reflects the project’s unique position at the forefront of how artists are reimagining the relationship between human creativity and artificial intelligence, offering a model for sustainable creative practice that honors both innovation and tradition.”

Two years ago in Paris, for my birthday, I went to a @polarinertia_ × my friend’s @u2p050 gig. It became my favorite French theatrical, climate-change techno ritual. An immersive séance that quietly rewired how I see things. An album unfolding as a performance, an exhibition behaving like a performance, all part of one continuous narrative world. The kind of worlds & artistic ecosystems we’re now co-creating and investing in.

I spoke with a shaman the other day, through a performance’s design, holding the metaphysical thread beneath it. She said my dancing is powerful. That it heals. That it helps souls pass between worlds. Not to fund it, but to return to it and dance. Which felt mad and obvious at the same time.

I trained in ballet as a kid, almost became a professional dancer. Years of discipline, pain, mirrors. I walked away. But perhaps it never really walked away from me. I still dance every day. It is my life-force.

Lately it’s felt like constant flashbacks of past futures and futuristic pasts. Time compresses. Dreams start to feel like a form of communication, like for the Achuar people of the Amazon.

The past two years disappeared in a second. Scarily fast. And yet: Brazil. Out of Brazil. Endless sunsets and jungle storms. Goofy faces with @shirin__neshat at the Triennale, where we both spoke. Sitting at the bottom of a 2,000-year-old Nabataean tomb, watching the moon rise, everything slowing down.

One second. A whole lifetime. Or two years.

My birthday spell for next week: another Parisian movement transcendence 🖤 & more magic ✨
