🏈 THE BATTLE FOR SPRING FOOTBALL

Should Virginia Change the Rules?

Virginia high school football finds itself at a crossroads.

Across the South, powerhouse states like Georgia, Florida, Alabama, and Texas allow spring football, padded practices, and live spring games that give athletes valuable development time and early recruiting exposure. Meanwhile, Virginia remains one of the more restrictive states.

Under current VHSL rules, schools can hold voluntary out-of-season workouts outside of designated dead periods—but there are major limits:

• No padded spring football.
• No live school-versus-school scrimmages.
• Practices cannot be mandatory or determine roster spots.

For many coaches, those restrictions create a competitive disadvantage.

Should the VHSL allow padded spring football and live school-to-school spring scrimmages?

🟦 Yes — Give Virginia athletes equal recruiting opportunities.

🟥 No — Protect multi-sport athletes and smaller programs.
