📣Join us in welcoming a new addition to the d'Art Center, Alison Sykes-Fryer!

Alison Sykes-Fryer is an award-winning artist known for her distinctive collage work that captures the texture of place, memory, and personal experience. Her main practice focuses on mixed media and collage, combining acrylic inks and paints with fragments of local print media to create evocative images that convey emotion, atmosphere, and narrative. Each piece she creates is an exploration—whether of a moment in time, a connection to the landscape, or the human relationship to place.

Born and raised in the UK, Alison’s early passion for creativity led her to study jewelry making and silversmithing at Reading University and The Cockpit Studios in London, where she refined her attention to detail and developed a strong sense of design. A relocation to the United States over a decade ago, and specifically to Virginia Beach, Virginia, marked a pivotal chapter in her creative journey. Immersed in the diverse ecology, maritime history, and ever-changing light of the Hampton Roads region, she began to draw direct inspiration from the surrounding coastal environment. Her current body of work reflects more than ten years of observing and engaging with this unique part of the United States—its shorelines, neighborhoods, flora, and communities. Many of her pieces incorporate print materials sourced from local newspapers and publications, grounding the work in the time and place of its creation and lending each collage a sense of lived reality.

Alison’s process is tactile and instinctive. She begins with an idea or a personal response to a place or occasion. She then selects and layers materials, building depth and texture to evoke the feeling of a landscape, a fleeting moment, or a quiet memory. Her use of recycled paper and print adds a documentary quality, underpinned with pops of color and mark-making infuses her work with energy.

Her artwork has gained recognition in both local and national exhibitions, with several pieces receiving awards for originality and technical skill, and her work is held in private collections both in the US and UK.
