To be a black woman starts off with the scent of a hot comb
Momma putting vaseline on my face before I leave the house
A shining star in the making

To be a black woman is to give a hug that is connected to trees of wisdom and delight
No more heavy weight just love to make

To be a black woman is to come together in the bathroom to fix and affirm
Because when one looks divine that means we all shine

To be a black woman is to see yourself through I
Reflections in the puddles of our strife
We rise

Through glitz and glamour kitty heels and claws
Black women have pioneered and paved the way through it all

You are not just an item of decor or a piece of a performance
You are rooted in the earth
You are here and so am I
Hand in hand
We ride
We rise
We shine
Through the grapevine

To be a black woman is to simply
Be.

A computer will never emulate what it means to be a black woman or the experience.
