For Episode #1, we’re going back to the 2023-24 season for a game that produced one of the craziest finishes in Iowa high school basketball history.

Defending state champion Valley. A tough Waukee squad. Double overtime. And a finish that would become known as “The Miracle at the Fieldhouse.”

With the game tied 79-79, Valley’s Zay Robinson appeared to bury the game-winner at the buzzer. But after officials put 0.5 seconds back on the clock, Waukee got one final chance.

What happened next was unforgettable.

Waukee 82, Valley 81. 2OT.

Swipe through for the two key players at the center of it all. ➡️

Mason Costello | Waukee

Before becoming a JUCO All-American and eventually reaching the Division I level at Appalachian State, Mason Costello was already building his legacy at Waukee.

The Warriors’ leading scorer was the centerpiece of a loaded Waukee squad, and on this night, he delivered the shot people still talk about to this day.

With less than a second remaining in double overtime and Waukee trailing 81-79, Jaden Rogers inbounded the ball to Costello near the opposite end of the floor.

One catch. One heave.

BANK. GAME. 82-81. 🤯

A shot from nearly the length of the floor to steal a win from the defending state champs.

Zay Robinson | Valley

The craziest part of “The Miracle at the Fieldhouse”?

For a few seconds, everybody thought Zay Robinson had already won it.

With the game tied 79-79 late in double overtime, Robinson secured the rebound off a Waukee miss, pushed the ball up the floor and created enough space to rise into a fading midrange jumper as time seemingly expired.

Cash.

The horn sounded. Valley celebrated. It looked like Robinson had just delivered an 81-79 win.

Then the officials deliberated and put 0.5 seconds back on the clock.

We know what happened next.

Robinson was one of the premier athletes on a Valley team in the middle of a three-year state championship run, and his athletic career eventually took him from an Iowa State football commitment to now Penn State football.

His shot didn’t officially become the game-winner, but without it, there is no miracle.

One bucket away from a completely
