Our first curated highlight for Graduate Show One, Kinetics & Motion, features graduate artists from across mediums that incorporate dynamic movement into their works. Whether drawing attention to freedom, control, or the passage of time, these artists activate their spaces through gesture, repetition, and implied action. In doing so, they invite viewers to consider how motion shapes perception and meaning. These projects examine movement beyond a simple visual effect, but as a language that speaks to rhythm, memory, and change.

Forms of Becoming curated by Billion Tekleab, SAIC MFA Sculpture ‘27

Thirteen MFA Sculpture students collect objects in flux, situating them to create new meanings, new realities, new life. We are becoming, so too are the works in this exhibition becoming—each piece a critical response to the ongoing nature of our own becomingness. Forms of Becoming inquires on this exploration of what eludes us and gets submerged in the material itself, and only for a moment, both the works and the artists’ transience are captured, glimmering (Sam), embracing (Debra), burning (Te), rustling (Luise), shaking (Won Ji), laughing (Ethan), resting (Helen), abandoning (Corey), sliding (Nyla), gripping (Sascha), expanding (Ely), pushing (Zach), and waiting (C’s).

For my seminar class, I started making South Park Portraits of everybody I love. It’s all highly theoretical I promise… please don’t judge me friends, it’s hard to capture all your likenesses with polygons 🟡🔷🔺🟩

Last weekend, directors @markjosephjeffery and @kelciafk graciously hosted the sculpture and ceramics graduates for a retreat in Manawa, Wisconsin at the @poorfarm_livingintheplay

Joined by professors @sarablack1 and @adrianwonghy , we cooked on the coals, cold water swam, fished, walked the cemetery, found materials, documented the land, and most importantly, gathered for discussion. With the rush of studio work and courses, Poor Farm was a welcome reset, a space to connect, a moment to address the challenges of being artists and making.
