Jayson | DiscoBalls

Full confession, I am a wee bit obsessed with pretty light. Whether it be well crafted studio light, mood lighting in my living room, dappled light in the forest or light reflecting off a building, it is guaranteed to make my heart sing. So, as this creative started taking shape, a clear theme came through: Reflective Light. Each part of this shoot was influenced by reflective materials and what better way to wrap up this shoot than with…drumroll please… DISCO BALLS!!!

I spent $100 on a range of disco balls and it was well worth the investment because this shot became a contender for my fave of the day. There’s so much to love, the light dancing around the scene, Jayson’s perfect characterization of a greasy disco ball dealer and possibly my proudest accomplishment, the disco ball bow tie. We all had so much fun building the disco ball pile, crafting the light and perfecting the pose that I felt like I did when I first picked up a camera.

Once we nailed the shot, we were blessed with such beautiful sunshine in the studio. Jayson switched wardrobe one last time and with the help of a piece of reflective mylar on the floor, we spent 10 minutes wrapping up an incredible day of exploration and creating for the sake of creating.

With the rise of AI and so many people choosing to skip the entire process, it is days like this that remind me why I love what I do. Yes, I love having these images in my portfolio but the absolute best part of it all IS the trial & error, the laughs had along the way and the sense of community you feel when everyone comes together for one goal in mind.

I am so proud of this shoot and forever grateful to have the memories. @jayson_collantes you are a legend and I’m so stoked to have collabed with you on this. Your future is bright my friend and I appreciate the trust and energy you brought to this shoot!

This was such a busy day and it wouldn’t have been possible without @van.img support and good vibes. I also have to thank my good pal @chrisrobinsonphoto once again for the encouragement and his lovely studio.

I think we can have confidence backwards. We keep waiting for the moment when we finally know what we’re doing, when we’ve made the right decisions, when our plans are working out, and when everything feels a little more certain.We tell ourselves that’s when we’ll feel confident enough to go after what we want. But how are you supposed to build confidence in yourself if you’re constantly waiting for proof that everything will work out before you even try?

You don’t build trust in yourself by making decisions that come with guaranteed outcomes. You build it by making choices,seeing what happens, changing your mind when something isn’t right, and realizing you’re capable of figuring things out along the way. You can kno what you want out of life without knowing exactly how you’re going to get there. You can be excited about your future without having a five-year plan for every part of it. Confidence isn’t having all the answers. It’s trusting yourself enough to live without them.

Jayson | Mirrors

One of the greatest feelings as a photographer is seeing an idea through to the end. We all fall victim to procrastination and self doubt from time to time, but every now and then an idea will scratch and claw begging to be fully realized… This leading image right here is one of those ideas that kept gnawing away at me: Mirrors attached to c-stands throughout the frame, light travelling from one to the next, eventually illuminating the subject.

In theory, the idea would work, but the only way to know for sure was to test it and luckily one of my best pals, @chrisrobinsonphoto was kind enough to lend me his space and face to test it (final frame). Chris has always been an inspiration for me as whenever he has an idea in his head, he brings it to life. “Just set a date and go from there” was his advice so that’s what I did.

The only missing piece now was a subject and that’s where @jayson_collantes came in to the fold. Having been buddies with his brother @anyo._ for years, when I met Jayson on a @nikkiormerod set a few summers back, we vibed instantly. We chatted about shooting a creative and when he told me he was moving to NYC cause he landed a role in the Magic Mike Live Show (congrats bud!), the time was now to make this shoot happen!

Jayson is an absolute pro! While he is well known for his break dancing skills, his modelling and acting chops have really taken off. He was so patient, confident and trusting in my vision and although it was a long day of exploration, his energy was always high. I’m so grateful we made this happen and I’m so proud of the work we created together, you rock Jayson.

Massive shoutout to @van.img for the assist that day and bringing your enthusiasm, you were a huge help my friend! @albumequipment for the grip and of course @chrisrobinsonphoto for lending me your space to create.

Watching the first three episodes of X-men 97 season 2 with a room full of nerds was so magically queer!

Also winning the costume contest with my Goblin Prince was pretty rad (but there were so many other good costumes !!!).

Great party from @meakoopa and crew, and so happy making new friends. Can’t wait to pop up to Toronto again for this!
