Thrilled to share my latest publication with Cambridge University Press: “The ‘First’ White Death: Royalism, Revolutionary Haiti, and the (Un)doing of Race.” Part of an edited volume called “Race in the Modern World: An Intellectual History.”

I walked into the archive in 2010 asking conventional questions about the impact of the Haitian Revolution in Latin America — not about royalism or political theology. Fifteen years on, what I’m finding is much more consequential (and harder to explain) than I expected.

This chapter is just one piece of the wider puzzle. The rest is coming. Link: https://www-cambridge-org.proxy.library.vanderbilt.edu/core/books/race-in-the-modern-world/first-white-death/1D56A63525BE6808E3E1F1785F48132E?utm_campaign=shareaholic&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_source=bookmark

Join the Beehive Design Collective for an exploration of two of their landmark graphic campaigns, MesoAmerica Resiste and The True Cost of Coal.

Date: 9/30/26
Time: 5:00 PM
Admission: FREE
Location: G-29 ‘The Space’ at Vanderbilt Divinity School
(411 21st Avenue South, Nashville, TN 37240)

For over 25 years, this all-volunteer activist arts collective has “cross-pollinated the grassroots” by transforming complex stories of social and environmental struggle into collaborative, anti-copyright artwork created in conversation with affected communities.

MesoAmerica Resiste, a sweeping visual story of resistance, land, globalization, and resource extraction across Mesoamerica, took 23 members of the collective nine years to complete.

The True Cost of Coal examines the human and ecological impacts of coal extraction while highlighting the communities organizing against it, and has recently been expanded through a rhyming storybook accompanying the collective’s large-scale mural.

Together, these works demonstrate how art can serve as a powerful tool for education, organizing, and solidarity, connecting local struggles to broader movements for social and environmental justice.
