🤔 How was I able to turn a sword hit into some sound design goodness with one plugin? Swipe to find out! 👉🏽

Shang-Chi's sound design was nothing short of amazing, and though I'll never live up, I wanted to take a stab at my own interpretation.

To make it interesting, I limited myself to time spent and using only three sound effects, pulled from @krotosaudio's free sounds with their newsletter.

Be honest with yourself: do you really need “better” gear? Or do you need more interesting things to record?

I know I fall into the constant trap of thinking if I buy this shiny piece of gear or new insane plugin then my sound design chops will improve.

It doesn’t.

Just record. With whatever you have. And if you have the itch to spend some cash, a higher return will ALWAYS be what you’re recording, not necessarily how you’re recording. Here are some examples of that!

Keep in mind that the video examples shown here are using the phone camera audio. Still sounds cool. Don’t focus on what gear they have at their disposal to record.

Remember, all the iconic sounds of Hollywood was recorded years ago with much less advanced technology. The creativity came from the source material, and the simple yet effective layering and processing chain.

Getting great sound is easier than you think!

Even as a pro, I still search these sites if I’m looking for a particular sound effect. So no, you don’t have to rush over to Pond5 and license something, search these sites first!

If you’re thinking about a paid option, I strongly recommend going with Soundly Pro. I use their high quality, ever-growing sound effects library in every single project I’ve done. It’s rare when I have to look outside of it. The great part is that you also have access to freesound.org’s (the best of this list) entire library from within the app!
