Girl go in that Telfar bag! 😝 I upcycled this pre-loved secondhand @telfarglobal mini tote with a few scuffs into a whole new work of art 🐅 Painting this gorgeous orange mini bag with the #vanrahsheerkhan henna-inspired tiger stripes brought a whole new feeling to this purse 🐯 The Sheerkhan collection was shot in the Galapagos Islands and the backdrop of the gorgeous jungles with my Trinidadian sari 🥻 and this one of a kind hand painted purse has created some of the most stunning photos I've ever taken 🧡 When the idea of the Sheerkhan tiger inspired paintings came to me, I struggled with the feeling of the tigers not looking professional enough or looking childish... but when the idea to do a riff on the tiger stripes as henna designs came to me I was soooo inspired ✨ The artwork was pouring out of me, and the colors were so gorgeous and rich, they look like nothing I've ever seen before and I adore them for that 🇹🇹🎨 Please check out the full VanRah Sheerkhan Collection of hand painted artwork--including greeting cards in my @etsy shop 💌 Link in bio 🔗

This iguana hijacked my #vanrahsheerkhan photoshoot in the Galapagos Islands 😂 What a ham! At first he snorted at me, then he wanted to pose with his little tongue out like a city girl, then he pooped in front of my feet, then he wouldn't leave!! Lo toxico 😅🤣😝

When the idea of the Sheerkhan tiger inspired paintings came to me, I struggled with the feeling of the tigers not looking professional enough or looking childish... but when the idea to do a riff on the tiger stripes as henna designs came to me I was soooo inspired ✨ Now these tigress were representational: my Black and Trini heritage, my ancestors, my languages, my interpretation of mirrors of myself 🐅🇹🇹✊🏾

The Sheerkhan Collection revels in the fun of puns and gorgeous tiger artwork. Each tigress is uniquely hand painted, her stripes influenced by traditional Desi henna designs and mehendi colors. Oranges, coppers, golds, blacks, greys, and rust colors all boldly layer creating stacked deep dimension and tiger stripes that echo with ancient ferver. Witty cursive title puns bring another narrative to the images, one of levity and slick sarcasm--little punchlines to accompany each painting.

These anklets are REAL personal baybee 💎🐅 You can't catch this tigress by her toe... And believe me, many have tried 😘 For all the girls who grew up hearing anklets, ankle jewelry, toe rings, temporary ankle tattoos, et al were "fast:" FUCK THAT PDF NOISE 🚸 I love coming back to my little kid self wearing my little jangling twinkling anklets running around the house, swimming at the YMCA pool, and sleeping in floor pallets 😂🇹🇹✊🏾 Her elders told her that she was dangerous... too fast, too herself, too much. If you need less in order to feel safe, then scarcity is your home and my Lord is not your shepherd 🕯️✨🌙 I rebuke it all 🔥🔮 These anklets aren't responsible for any adult's or spirit's actions, ideas, or beliefs. Fuck that jinn. 🌙🙅🏾‍♀️⚔️🪔 Absolutely all the art in the #vanrahsheerkhan collection is infused and informed by this freedom, self love, self care, and the empowerment of my fearless inner child 🐯

This collection of tigress artwork is so personal to my inner child 🐅 And @bombaymami has dropped thee inner child mantra with this song❣️ When the idea of the Sheerkhan tigress paintings came to me, I struggled with the feeling of the tigers not looking professional enough or looking childish... But when I had the idea to do a riff on the tiger stripes as henna designs I was soooo inspired ✨ The critical voices of "its going to look stupid" were overtaken by the immense joy and confidence of "they're going to look cool!" The artwork was pouring out of me, and the colors were so gorgeous and rich, they look like nothing I've ever seen before and I adore them for that 🎨 Growing up as a little Black and Trini girl in Midwest US, I didn't see a ton of comprehensive representation. My elders struggled with Black and Caribbean pride, and the Indo diaspora through the Caribbean was only taught to me in my household--never outside the home. It was like we had a history, culture, and existence that literally didn't exist outside our family. I didn't meet other Trinidadians until I left for college in Washington, DC. That little kid inside me who watched Bollywood movies on DVDs in Ferguson, MO, learned to cook curry goat, hated eating four day old pelau, only heard urdu from my complicated Dardhi Jaan, and learned most Muslim prayers from blessing food and praying at funerals... How could I tell her that her drawings were stupid? Even if they are childlike--that's actually real freedom for the little girl who had to grow up too fast. She was fearless and dreamed of great adventures, and taking her to the Galapagos Islands to study sea turtles was such an emotional and spiritual experience. Imagine me riding a bike through the hot Galapagos jungles in a black Trinidadian sari and opera gloves to take these photos after my shift, dripping sweat into my braids and black eyeliner 😂 And with the incredible photographer @fiamma_bev the #vanrahsheerkhan collection now has some of the most stunning images I've ever taken or even seen in my life 💝 Please check out the full VanRah Sheerkhan Collection of paintings in my Etsy 🐅💌

Ooooweeeee the ways the light caught the layers of paint in "Bangle Tiger" just did something to meeeeee 🤩🐅🐯 I painted deep purple, gold, copper, black, and charcoal henna designed stripes as the tiger's orange fur. The tigress arm is stacked with gold and blue jewelry: bracelets, bangles, and chains with ornate shining blue jewels popping against the orange fur. The tigress paw's long black manicured talonous claws have a thin white lit cigarette smoking perched between two fingers. She's such a beautyyyyyyy 🐯 I hate that the limitations of print copy mean that I can't get this incredible color dimension on my greeting cards... Only the original painting will show all this gorgeous (and laborious) painting 🎨 But the copies are still beautiful! They'll show the bold colors and hints of gold ✨

When muses collide 🐯☕ Loveeee a #vanrahchai crossover wit my gorgeous Trini inspired #vanrahsheerkhan tigers! "Tiger Lily Tea" blends many motifs of my artwork--chai, clouds, smoke, cursive, Arabic, flowers, nature, and of course clean abstract images ✨ "Tiger Lily Tea" hand painted card shows the back of a pouncing tiger with her little back paws and tail wiggling down into a large teacup. I loveee the vibrant teal color of the cup and saucer against this black background. Deep purple, gold, copper, black, and charcoal henna designed stripes adorn the tigress' body. Her little tail is wrapped around the white dangling tea bag tag which reads, "Sheerkhan" in both Arabic and English.

Thank you to @chrislloydpianist for this lovely shoutout in his thorough review of @classicalnext conference in Budapest! While I am an artist, I don’t identify as a musician, so it was an honor to participate in a Classical:Next fishbowl panel about representation in classical music as an institution. Wage gaps, tokenism, micro aggressions, active harm, unconscious bias, and institutionalized prejudice are embedded in all our institutions—not just classical music or the entertainment industry. Happy to bring my background in social justice, empowerment, and intersectional identities to this community 🫶🏾 Maybe I’ll see y’all again next year at Classical:Next in Poland 😉

Elizabeth Taylor + Dracula = #vanrahstyledit 🤭🧛‍♂️💎🩸 I recently read Elizabeth Taylor’s autobiography and am currently perusing her coffee table book “My Love Affair with Jewelry,” and baybeeee she inspired the MAIN character of all my Budapest outfits to be thee jewelry! Being in Eastern Europe, I also wanted to channel some gothic vampire vibes. This gorgeous Grace Chuang taffeta and burgundy velvet jacket with the vibrant blood colored interior was such a rich looking piece that married the Liz Taylor and vampire vibes. Jacket from @poshmark Colorful jeweled cross earrings by @shopakira and the garnet and pearl drop earrings are from when I was invited to the White House back in 2022. They are replicas of Nancy Reagan’s earrings, and since Reaganomics was ACTUAL vampirism, I loved the poetry of wearing them with this look. If you look closely, the curls are an homage to the OG Dracula hairdo 🤭😂 Black square neck ribbed midi dress by @nastygal from @uptownballwin back in 2023. Boots from @nordstromrack

Dita Von Teese X Count Dracul🩸✨ #vanrahstyledit been loving veils with sexy outfits lately… They feel like little crowns or star blankets swathing my curls, swear I be the Black Madonna when I’m rockin them 🤭💫 @jlo vintage glamour—especially the hair—in #kissofthespiderwoman had me thinking about how to do those low tight coif curls with a little veil. With my longer hair, though, I reinterpreted the original inspo with some shoulder-grazing looped braids and it turned out more pinup than I had initially planned but I loveeeee me some @ditavonteese so it felt like a win 💅🏾 I really wanna do this look again but with my lace gloves and better lighting lol the street light ain’t do me justice!!! 🤭😂 Had the absolute pleasure of seeing @walkmyworldtheshow in Budapest and it was sensational 🤩 I laughed, I cried, I was awe-struck. This was thee perfect outfit to wear to their incredible interactive gothic performance ♥️🖤

Gorgeous lace corset from @shopakira Lace skirt from @poshmark Hair scarf is vintage, I’ve had it forever lol Earrings from @lovisajewellery Lace choker necklace @forever21
