We are pleased to share images of Tanoa Sasraku’s 2026 Turner Prize presentation on view now at Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (@mimauseful) until 29 March 2027. Tanoa Sasraku explores materials and their narrative potential through the prism of human power structures. Her artworks make connections between seemingly distinct material processes, found objects and familiar symbols, inviting the viewer to be curious about where they came from, who they belong to and how they were made. She is nominated for her solo exhibition Morale Patch at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA), London. For her Turner Prize exhibition, Sasraku investigates the dynamics, instruments and aesthetics of power that facilitate “extractivism” – the aggressive, large-scale removal of natural resources for profit. Materials and objects in the exhibition include raw pigment found in the earth in Cornwall and Ghana, used to saturate a paper suit pattern; liquid crude oil contained inside highly processed, petrochemically derived acrylic paperweights; and stacks of bleached stripes on brittle sheets of paper held together with binder clips, each titled with the battles for which they faintly signify. The support structures for the work are designed and crafted to impose a sense of gravitas and pride in the spoils of extraction and war. The darkness of the rubber floor absorbs the light and focuses attention on the objects and their materiality. For Tanoa Sasraku, contemporary conflicts are often sustained by myths of protection and control - by the idea that invasion can be recast as defence, settlement, even the creation of a better world. She calls these conquered terrains “potential rivieras”: places where war and leisure begin to occupy the same imaginative space. Her sculptures “are constructed from sheets of blank newsprint that have been cut and layered to resemble military flak jackets,” writes @theo__weiss. Tanoa Sasraku @tanoasasraku (Visual Arts Fellow, 2021)⁠ Fibrous Green⁠ ⁠ Year: 2026⁠ Medium: Silkscreen print with heat sensitive ink onto Somerset Newsprint 300gsm⁠ Size: 76 x 112 cm⁠ ⁠ Tanoa Sasraku's Fibrous Green reproduces a life-size garment pattern piece torn from the back of a British Army flak jacket worn during desert warfare in the early 2000s. The camouflage pattern is rendered in a palette referencing a jungle environment and screenprinted in black and thermochromatic green ink. The green ink temporarily disappears when exposed to heat or human touch, allowing the viewer’s interaction with the work to register over time as permanent marks as the ink’s sensitivity naturally diminishes.
