When it came to the remix of Human Connection Index, I only had one artist in mind.

@variable_self have consistently impressed me with their approach to electronic music, particularly, the way they use live performance and hardware to create something that feels genuinely their own.

Because Human Connection Index is built around such a personal melodic structure, I knew this remix needed someone who would understand the core of the original, but have the creativity to completely reimagine it.

variable_self delivered far beyond anything I could have expected.

The remix is intricate, detailed and full of subtle references to the original, while ultimately taking the track in a completely different direction — a 180° electro flip that pushes the original idea somewhere entirely new.

This is exactly the kind of creative approach I’m searching for with Transistor Rhythms: taking electronic music somewhere it hasn’t been before.

Very proud to have this one as part of the Human Connection Index.

// THE HUMAN CONNECTION INDEX IS NOW ONLINE

At its heart, Human Connection Index is an attempt to capture the feeling of finding that special connection that seems to transcend explanation.

In reality, it’s a manifestation of the human emotional experience translated into rhythm and sound. It’s something that’s been written as a direct resistance to the involvement of Artificial Intelligence in our music scene.

I truly wanted to push this record beyond the boundaries of what I thought I was capable of. It’s not experimentation for its own sake, but an attempt to translate a feeling into sound: the rush, the recognition, the overwhelming joy of finding something that feels impossibly rare.

The record comes complete with a @variable_self remix. Through a total deconstruction of the original track, familiar sounds become fragments, fragments become memories and the spaces between them become charged with anticipation. The result is not a remix that simply revisits the original, but one that discovers what else was hiding inside it.

The finishing touch was delivered with a high fidelity master from @thirdsonmusic / @mstr_learn - he’s an incredible artist in his own right and it’s a privilege to have his involvement in the record.

Thanks to @electronicgroove and @moskalus for their premieres and helping to get The Index online.

@variable_self rounding off 2025 with me in the @swu.fm studio 🎄💕

I had to quickly abscond in the 2nd hour to travel to see @jamiroquaihq in Brum (who were incredible + who I opened this set with, with Just Another Story from The Return of the Space Cowboy).

Barnaby did a stellar job of holding down the airwaves in my absence with lots of broken rhythms 🌞

Bristol’s thriving underground continues to turn heads, and this time it’s with the debut of emerging artist variable_self on Hammer’s ever-reliable Remmah label. With the Stone Jam EP, a widescreen three-tracker, variable_self delivers a bold statement: a forward-thinking take on acid-soaked hardware and analogue textures that connects dance music’s past, present, and future.
‘Prism State’ sharpens the edges, offering crystalline electro steeped in cascading synths and blissful harmonics, a trip that invites both movement and immersion.
From the South West to the world, variable_self stands out as a new force, drawing on nostalgia only to drive things forward.
A live performer, producer, and DJ, variable_self is known for blending vintage and modern sounds into sets and performances that push both energy and emotion—from melancholic introspection to peak-time euphoria. With a deep passion for 303s and hardware, their live acid bass jams have lit up Bristol institutions like Motion, The Love Inn, Lost Horizon, and Exchange, as well as their residency at the Red Room.
Their last EP, BDGRL SDGRL, showcased experimental textures and spaced-out vocals crafted on vintage machines. Now, with the Stone Jam EP on Remmah, variable_self sharpens their signature style: lush synths, driving drum machines, deep basslines, and unmistakable acid melodies.
