do you read me?! nyc with the Various Projects Archive presents: PAVILLON DE L’ESPRIT NOUVEAU: A 21ST CENTURY SHOW HOME

Presented by the Swiss Institute PAVILLON DE L’ESPRIT NOUVEAU: A 21ST CENTURY SHOW HOME was curated by Felix Burrichter, the editor and creative director of PIN–UP. The groundbreaking exhibition channelled the visionary irreverence of Le Corbusier for a 21st century take on domesticity.

The classic chroma key green referenced on the cover is used to create digital landscapes and interiors to complement the furnishings of the space. On a small monitor mounted on the wall, a series of generated interiors cycle through to illustrate what the room would look like as a spaceship, or underwater, or in the middle of the desert.

do you read me?! nyc with the Various Projects Archive presents: Oda Jaune - Sculptures

A collaborative project between Oda Jaune’s sculptural forms and Camille Vivier’s photographic eye, this title exhibits different manifestations of the female nude figure. Oftentimes relying on a single light source, the images contrast light and shadow, flesh and bronze, and organic and artificial forms to create tension and harmony between the constructed nude and the human nude.

do you read me?! nyc with the Various Projects Archive presents: CAPS LOCK

How can we divorce capitalism and graphic design? From the designs on our dollar bills to the designs of interfaces for financial institutions, graphic designers have facilitated the growth and look of capitalism in society. Ruden Pater cuts this bleak picture by also including musings on new forms of design already in practice that challenge its connection to capital. With the help of illustrated and photographic examples, Caps Lock explores this symbiotic relationship and what we can do to radically shift the trajectory of design careers

do you read me?! nyc with the Various Projects Archive presents: ALGOFFSHORE is a unique publication that compiles a file of leaked financial documents, international patents, court proceedings, and academic research to call attention to the practice of tax evasion by multinational corporations, all through the format of a how-to manual. Part self-help book, part exposé, ALGOFFSHORE uses graphs and interviews to illustrate how these corporations maintain anonymity while shirking their financial obligations to environmental and social institutions.

do you read me?! nyc with the Various Projects Archive presents: A Primer of Visual Literacy is the common ground from which all art generates meaning. Donis A Donis, a designer and teacher, created a guide to learning how to read and understanding the patterns that imbue meaning into the visual world. The forms of visual communication that Donis covers range from negative space, to dots and lines, to the arrangement of patterns to convey unity.

do you read me?! nyc with the Various Projects Archive presents: Georg Gatsas’s The Process

With photographs of people and ephemera from the underground music and art scene in New York during the early 2000s, Georg Gatsas’s The Process serves as an archive for that time period for what people were doing, seeing, and wearing. The candid shots of the glitzy and gritty parts of the city are also exemplary of the cyclical nature of culture; a visual reminder of where our current trends come from.

To mark our last day open at the 38 St Marks Place location, we took a gratitude walk around the Swiss Institute, pairing good reads with kindred artworks and architectural moments embedded around the building which was refurbished and redesigned by Selldorf Architects when SI relocated here in June 2018.

Featured books across spaces and installations:

1: “Mirrors” by Eric Oglander in front of John Armleder’s mirrored tile installation “Royal Flush”
2: “Trellick Tower London” by Craig Atkinson photographed high up on the ladder looking down on the store while restocking the towering USM shelves
3: “Empires Over Skin: How We Fashioned Our World” by Meltdown Your Books seen with Li Tavor’s installation of “Figures”
4: “Tony Bechara: Annotations on Color Schemes” with wall paintings by Hendl Helen Mirra
5: “It’s Nice Today: On Climate, Comfort, and Pleasure” by Lacaton & Vassal set against tinted doors leading into the window-filled library room
