Since 1776.

The 2026/27 Frederick Hammersley Visiting Artist, Eric J. Garcia, shares the meaning of his expansive mural in the Museum's lobby as a commentary on the state of world since 1776 and the meaning of celebrating 250 years since 1776. The mural intentionally integrates another installation by Ron Rael and Virginia San Fratello, "Teeter-Totter."

Rael was the 2022/23 Frederick Hammersley Visiting Artist. In 2019, Rael San Fratello (along with Colectivo Chopeke) installed Teeter-Totter, three pink see-saws on the US-Mexico border, named 2020 Design of the Year. The Museum purchased one of the three see-saws in 2023.

Albuquerque Museum’s Visiting Artist program is generously supported by the Frederick Hammersley Fund for the Arts at the Albuquerque Community Foundation.

Coffee grounds, grape skins, wildfire ash… and architecture? 👀

At first glance, ‘Rael San Fratello: Prototypes and Provocations’ is full of unexpected materials and playful experiments. But look a little closer, and there’s a lot more going on: questions about sustainability, borders, and how design can bring people together.

The exhibition explores more than two decades of work by Oakland-based architecture and design studio Rael San Fratello, including ‘Sanctuary,’ a 3D-printed structure made from soil, straw, and water, and the iconic ‘Teeter-totter Wall.’

Thank you to everyone who joined us last week for the opening of “Dread Scott: The Body Politic” and “Rael San Fratello: Prototypes and Provocations.” We loved seeing the galleries filled with conversation and curiosity—and now’s your chance to take a close look at these shows.

See the work this week during normal gallery hours: Wed 11am–8pm (with free admission all day), or Thu through Sun 11am–5pm.

Or see the exhibitions during the Nexus Party, co-presented by MoAD & YBCA this Thursday night.
